Concord, New Hampshire: National School of Business, 1900. Fine; letter folds.. Printed advertisement for E.L. Glick's National School of Business, with a striking visual: an engraved reproduction of a calligraphic drawing of a horse, made almost entirely of flourishes. Aside from being the proprietor of one of the most successful business schools of the day, Glick (b.1867) was also "a penman of remarkable versatility and skill. The pages of the National Penman, the recognized organ of penmanship in America, has been adorned in successive numbers for many years with Mr. Glick's work, both in handwriting and the more ornate branches of penmanship, and many of the prizes offered by that journal for the finest work in penmanship have fallen into Mr. Glick's hands" (State Builders: An Illustrated Historical and Biographical Record of the State of New Hampshire, p. 375). Measures 9.75" by 9.5"; verso blank.

9.29. Four (4) original watercolor designs are attributed to Jane Langton while a graduate student at Radcliffe. Although not signed they were given to the previous owner by Ms. Langton as her work. Finely detailed well executed art. Created on art board, each measures 12" x 8 1/2" Jane Gillson Langton (1922-) is an American writer and author of children's literature and mystery novels. She both writes and illustrates her novels. Previous owner indicated they came with a note "I made these tiresomely stylized dolls when a graduate student at Radcliffe, about 1946

YMCA, 1918. Fine to very fine. Some rust staining from staples.. An informational pamphlet discouraging servicemen from having sex with prostitutes, published towards the end of the war for the Sex Education Bureau of the National War Work Council of the YMCA. It begins by asserting that "Nearly every prostitute is diseased" (p. 1), and that, given the consequences, the risk isn't worth it; after all, Syphilis "is about the meanest, rottenest disease a man or a woman can have" (p. 2) and "You can't play in the muck and keep clean" (p. 3). Plain talk seems to be the order of the day here, as the pamphlet goes on to align virtue and cleanliness with patriotic duty. Interesting book construction with the cat opening about half way to expose a the actual book. The book measures 5" x 12". The tale of this anthropomorphic stuffed animal and his adventures encountering Mrs. Bunny along the way and requiring a sewing repair job from his owner when he returns. Printed in two colors. No OCLC 3/31/2015.

Paris, France: MP Marcel Picardo, 12-Jun-02. A single fold menu for Hotel de L'Empire located in Paris, France. The menu is most likely for their hotel restaurant and is dated June 12, 1902. That night dinners had a choice been Turbot (fish) in a cream sauce or chicken. The hotel was located at No. 7 Rue Daunou and is no longer in existence (though there is a hotel by the same name currently in Paris). The menu also has an advertisement for Redfern, a store in Paris that sold Furs, Robes, Dresses, Manteaux (coats), Lingerie and Trousseaux. Refern was a British tailoring firm founded in 1855 by John Redfern that had several stores across Europe. Its Paris extension was operated as a couture establishment which developed into a leading European Couture house, while its other branches were mostly tailors and/or importers. "Seventy-three percent of the population of tsarist Russia (exclusive of children under nine years of age) was illiterate... at present, illiteracy has in the main been wiped out in the U. S. S. R. In twenty years of Soviet rule, 40,000,000 adults were taught to read and write." A manuscript chemical formula and sample book for 1926 sorted by product type e.g. sulfur color type with a typed explanation as to the process followed by examples of the type of color e.g. Sulfur Colors by the active ingredient e.g. Thionel Black G ext and the name of the fabric company. These is followed by various dyed fabric swatches with percentages of chemical used. Followed by information on the next color and/or company until information was recorded on all samples for that procedure. Each section of the book is displayed in that format for all Procedures. Roberts, copyrighted by Sophie Lichtenfels. Written in a German accent, "De Lord has given me a telegram to deliver to you peeples dis morning" Sophie lived near her church in New York City and felt she was bon a preacher. She gave her meager income to support the missionary outreach program and wished to be a missionary herself (Patty MeGarvey, U.S. Archives of the C&MA, Colorado) 5" x 3" slight staining and small tears on cover.

A short booklet from the Corrective Eating Society about why some foods cause an upset stomach and how to change one's diet to minimize stomach issues. The booklet starts by proclaiming that "no discovery of the past fifty years in the field of health investigation exceeds in importance as the recent discovery that the stomach and intestinal tract are the seat of 90 percent of all sickness." It continues on to compare the stomach to a furnace, and that while the 'heat' the stomach makes contains the 'spark of life', people are "careless fireman" who have have grown accustomed to eating meals "which have the same effect on the system as dynamite, soggy wood and mud, mixed with a little coal, would have on a real furnace."
