Barre, Massachusetts: Barre Publishers, 1964. First edition, limited to 1500 copies, with "All royalties for the benefit of the Quebec-Labrador Mission Foundation." Octavo (9.25" x 6.25"), [8], 111, & [1] pages, illustrated. Publisher's yellow/ tan cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, with pictorial device of a fishing net in gilt on the upper cover, in slipcase with an applied, printed title label on the front panel.
Small spot near the top of the spine, previous owner's bookplate at the verso of the first blank page causing staining from mounting glue evident on the recto, otherwise Very Good in like slipcase, lightly soiled, with a couple of dings at the edges.
This copy from the collection of Mary & Bert Tilt with their "Hunting - Fishing" bookplate. The author was a wealthy investment banker, avid angler and gifted writer.

Gilt dull on 4 volumes, moderate wear at spine extremities & corners, couple of hinges cracked, previous owner's bookplate in all volumes, foxing, certainly Good or better. From the library of Richard Cecil Garlick, Jr who was professor of French at the University of Virginia. Henry Carrington Lancaster, chair of the Romance Languages Department and professor of French at Johns Hopkins, was the world's foremost expert on French dramatic literature of the 16th through 18th centuries. He was also the first non French citizen to be awarded the Legion d'Honneur Three further volumes, extending the exhaustive treatise through 1700 (not offered here). were eventually published.

Chicago: Amalgamated Union Label, LIP & BA, 1936 issued to Wm. E Burns of Lynbrook, New York, 1936 Small broadside (3.5" x 7") printed recto only, with portrait vignettes of Lincoln & Washington.
A fine example. Recognizes Mr Burns as a contributor & participant "in the work of bringing about a return to the fundamental principles of our government." Interestingly, the certificate was printed by the Lithographers' International Protective and Beneficial Association, a union shop.

The author was the long-time editor & publisher of The State newspaper.

The story of John "Babbacombe" Lee relayed in the first person who survived execution by hanging on three different occasions in February of 1885. After the final attempt the attending medical officer declined to proceed. Released from prison in 1907, Lee emigrated to the United States where he died in 1945. The story inspired the 1971 album "Babbacombe Lee" by the English folk rock group Fairport Convention, making it the first "folk rock opera" in music history.

The author was then Assistant Professor of Political Science at Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Her study is based on extensive travels in sub Saharan Africa & hundreds of interviews with tribal leaders & private individuals. Interestingly, a rubber-stamped statement on the rear wrap identifies the Information Service of South Africa as a registered foreign agent & that said registration does not "indicate approval of this material by the United States Government."

Gunn/ Gay American Novels, 1870–1970: p 104 Upper margin & spine extremities sunned, edges lightly rubbed, text slightly toned & occasionally foxed, about Very Good in moderately rubbed dust jacket with short tears & small losses mostly at the top & bottom of the spine, Good or better. Partially autobiographical, the novel centers around young Jeff Ramsey & his "unsentimental education" in "the gay, tawdry, amoral, sometimes brutal world of a seedy summer stock company" Author Burwell was himself an actor & director as well as the founder of The Belfast Maskers in Belfast, Maine.

Off Our Backs, edited by a consensus collective, was initially published on February 27, 1970 and ran continuously until 2008 when financial constraints forced termination. It was the longest running publication of its kind. As gleaned from the website of the University of Maryland, which holds the archive for this important journal, the mission of Off Our Backs was "to provide news and information about women's lives and feminist activism; to educate the public about the status of women around the world; to serve as a forum for feminist ideas and theory; to be an information resource on feminist, women's, and lesbian culture; and to seek social justice and equality for women worldwide."

Promotional brochure, bifolium, light card stock, single sheet measuring 7.25 inches by 8 inches folded once vertically, illustrated including a two page spread of the performers in drag, with suggestions "for your drinking pleasure" on the rear panel offering Scotch for $1.15 and other distilled spirits at $1.10.
Slightly soiled, otherwise fine.
The club, which opened in 1936, certainly one of the first drag venues in the United States, was relegated to posterity in 1999.
