23-37 with cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 11, number 2 complete issue. First edition. The australopithecine bone accumulations are here discussed in terms of Dart's osteodontokeratic hypothesis. The evidence presented by Dart does seem to justify the hypothesis that the australopithecines used tools of bone, tooth and horn. Objections to the hypothesis appear to depend more upon their authors' preconception than upon convincing counterevidence. Recent studies of differential bone accumulation in modern contest and an osteodontokeratic assemblage from the Mousterian in England suggest ways in which the hypothesis can be further evaluated, provided that the australopithecine context as we now understand it remains the frame of reference for comparative studies. Description:
647-660 pages. Quarto (10" x 7") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Hispanic American Historical Review Volume XXVII, Number 4 complete issue. First edition. One basic economic problem in sixteenth-century New Spain was that of securing an adequate supply of food for the colony. Widespread deficiencies in the grain supply were particularly common, occasioned by underproduction, unfavorable weather, hoarding, labor shortages, maldistribution, or by a combination of these factors. In periods of acute shortage the lack of grain became a threat to the entire colonial economy. Such a period of crisis existed in the decade from 1575-1585, and during these ten years a comprehensive effort was made to solve the grain-supply problems by means of legislation. This work reflect that period. Condition: Edge wear with small chips, spine ends chipped, corners bumped else very good.

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Read More
