London: John Spencer & Co. (Publishers) Limited, n.d., [1959]. First edition. Small 35¢ price sticker affixed to front cover. 15 mm closed tear to lower front cover with crease, a very good copy. (24459). Small octavo, pictorial wrappers. Badger Books SF 13. Set in the distant future, the story recollects the period, a thousand years before the events of the novel, a period when the Sun cooled and Earth became uninhabitable. Mankind migrated to Venus, and later to Mercury. On Mercury the colonists are enslaved by the dictatorial Overlords, against whom they finally rebel and destroy. They return to Earth, which is now recovering as the ice recedes and the planet warms up again. Also present is a short story, "Point of No Return" by Max Chartair (i.e. John Glasby) about an advanced space ship that enters deep space beyond the orbit of Pluto, never to return. Not in Clarke. Reginald 08637 (dating 1954).

London:Dennis Dobson, [1972]. First British (and first hardcover) edition. A fine copy in a fine dust jacket. (29064). Octavo, boards. "Nowhere is Lafferty's devout Catholicism more evident than in this strange mélange of a novel, which incorporates elements of fantasy and science fiction while being indefinable as either. The book's madcap characters and bizarre settings are typical Lafferty, as is the uncertainty about whether the wild plot, essentially a secret history of the world, amounts to a complete allegory or simply a crazy game -- or perhaps both. No matter, since the result is also typical Lafferty in being highly entertaining and absorbing." - Barron (ed), Fantasy and Horror (1999) 7-217. The earlier American paperback original was published as part of the highly regarded Ace "Specials" series. 1970 Nebula nominee. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-621. New York: St. Martin's Press, [1993]. First edition. Head of spine slightly bumped, a fine copy in a fine jacket with bump at the head of the spine panel. (26563). Octavo, boards. "With a breakneck pace and a wonk's sense of humor, Laidlaw ( Neon Lotus ) neatly satirizes our postmodern society in this wild, almost hallucinatory novel. In the future U.S.A. that is the book's setting, flat-screen entertainment has evolved into full virtual-reality experience; stars are "wired'' to transmit from their senses directly to their worshipful audiences, who are themselves wired to receive more channels than a cable box..." - Publisher's Weekly. "As brilliant a satire on the future of media and popular culture as any of Pohl and Kornbluth's classic works." - George Zebrowski. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-626.
