Paris: Firmin Didot Freres, 1840. Miniature book, in original publishers paper over boards and matching publisher's slipcase. Engraved title page plus six engravings illustrating selected fables of Jean de La Fontaine. 96pp; 2-3/8" x 1-5/8", bound in bright green paper over boards with romantique design stamped in black on both covers and on spine, aeg, housed in matching publisher's slipcase with title "Le Petit La Fontaine" printed in black within four-ruled decorative border on front of case and romantique design printed on rear of case. A bit of paper missing at spine edges so that white shows a bit, else fine and quite remarkable thus. While Fermin-Didot miniatures are not uncommon, those in original binding with publisher's matching slipcase are decidedly not common!

Paris: Librairie Garnier Freres, 1925. 8vo; handsomely rebound in 1/2 morocco and marbled paper boards, spine gilt. Back cover and board edges worn, text slightly browned.

One of 1150 copies on Rives, from a total issue of 1408; handsomely rebound in 3/4 brown morocco and marbled paper boards, spine with gilt lettering, decorated endpapers, t.e.g., original wrappers and backstrip bound in. Very light foxing along fore-edges and occasionally in the text; original backstrip chipped and worn. With a frontispiece author-portrait engraved on wood by P.-E. Vibert, who also designed and engraved the ornaments.

Limited Edition, one of 395 on papier velin d'Arches, from a total issue of 1050; 4to; handsomely rebound in 3/4 brown morocco and marbled paper boards, spine with gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., original wrappers and backstrip bound in; lightly foxed throughout, else very good.

Williamsburg [MA]: Heron Press, 1971. One of 50 artist's proof copies from a total edition of 200, this on Velke Losiny paper, signed by the artist, Bruce Chandler, and author , S. R. Lavin, and labeled "Artist's Proof" on colophon. Large folio, bound in brown marbled paper, brown cloth clamshell box with red morocco label on spine, fine. Designed and printed in red and black by Bruce Chandler, the book contains seven original woodcuts. One of Chandler's earliest works -- a strong production.

Stillwater, Maine, 2000. Artist's Proof, signed by the artist on the colophon, on various hand-made papers. Page size: 2-13/16 inches x 1-3/4 inches; 6 preliminary pages in various shades of green, one page painted in gold gilt tree, title in various greens on another and author's name lettered in dark green on light green paper on third; 23 pages, sewn by hand in green and blue silk hand-painted and lettered with text of Karl Young's homage to nature and spring. Bound by the artist in green silk and sewn with gold gilt thread, housed in green paper slipcase with green ribbon pull and gold stitching on spine of case, fine. One line of the poem reads, "Here paths smell like spring" and this little gem of a book reminds us of the glory of that season.

[Paris, ND]. One of 500 on velin blanc (not numbered) from a total issue of 508. Page size: 9-1/2 x 12-3/4 inches; 32pp. Handsomely rebound in 3/4 bordeaux morocco and marbled paper boards, spine with gilt lettering, marbled endpapers, t.e.g., original wrappers bound in, some rubbing to edges else fine. Illustrated with 16 prints hors-texte, colored in pochoir, after pen, crayon, and watercolor drawings by Basile Leblanc of prominent monuments in Paris.

One of 200 copies only, numbered on colophon page, with Acheve d'imprimer noting that heliotypes are by Leon Marotte, pochoirs by Jean Saude and printed on papiers anciens of Jean Barry, and photographs by Langlois. Page size: 11 x 14 inches; 77 pages of facsimiles; 20pp. introduction and commentary; indices for before Thermidor and "Les Deux Journees". Bound: handsomely rebound in 3/4 red morocco with red and blue marbled endpapers, , top edge gilt, double row of headbands in blue, red and white, original wrappers bound in, near fine. the text contains portraits, cartoons, facsimiles of the broadside printing of "The Rights of Man" as well as documents pertaining to the revolutions, most taken from the originals at the National Archives of France. An extraordinary account of a very troubled period in France copied from original sources by all print means available in 1908.

Bound: original blue wrappers printed in black, white sticker showing price of 12'6 net at bottom of front cover, stamp on back cover "Revised prices on application," minor wear to covers and trace of age toning to page edges, a handful of small pencil notes in text, but generally very good+. In English with Greek translation by Dr. Nestle opposite the Syriac. Dr. Agnes Smith Lewis (PhD., LL.D., D.D., Litt.D.) and her sister Dr. Margaret Dunlop Gibson (LL.D., D.D., Litt.D.) were born in Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1843, the twin daughters of a wealthy solicitor. Wrappers a little soiled, pages of text a bit browned, else very good. A key reference in the history of the danse.

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1874. First Edition thus with seven heliotypes after drawings by Winslow Homer. Small 4to; 52pp, salmon-colored "watered" cloth stamped in gold gilt and black reproducing the Homer silhouette of a young girl sitting peeling apples in black on gold with the author, title, and illustrator in black, gilt stamping and lettering on spine, all edges gilt, spine a bit dimmed, a bit of soiling and wear around edges with one bump on bottom back edge, inner hinge loose at title page, contemporary inscription on front free endpaper, probably the best copy of this scarce book we've had. The book was also issued in a tougher green cloth and brown leather. The pale salmon color is the prettiest - and the hardest to find in acceptable condition. These seven silhouettes by Homer are in the tradition of a popular American folk art form that came into popularity in America in the late 19th century but was rarely used for book or magazine illustration. Illustrated with a wood-engraved frontispiece printed in black and brown, 5 headpieces, and 5 tailpieces, all designed and engraved by Maurice Brocas.

Monaco: A la Voile Latine, 1946. One of 234 numbered copies on velin pur fil a la forme des papeteries Johannot, from a total edition of 250, each signed by the artist. Page size: 9-3/4 x 12-1/2 inches; 110pp; including colophon, list of illustrations and Acheve d'imprimer. Handsomely rebound in 3/4 green morocco and paste-paper boards, spine paneled, title gilt, top edge gilt, original green, black and white lithographed covers bound in, some rubbing at edges else fine. Illustrated by Andre Marchand with frontispiece and three lithographs hors-texte printed in black. The lithographed capitals in the text are printed in red. The text was printed on the presses of Fequet et Baudier in Paris; the lithographs were printed by Desjobert in Paris.

Paris: Edins Pierre Lafitte, 1938. One of 1800 copies on velin from a total edition of 2575. 8vo. Bound by LePretre: 3/4 red morocco and paste-paper boards with gilt and blind-stamped sunburst radiating over upper and lower covers, spine smooth, title gilt, top edge gilt (stamped on front blank Lepretre). Original covers bound in, near fine. Illustrated with fourteen plates hors-texte by Mariette Lydis (1890-1970), with bandeaux and culs-de-lampe by Sylvain Sauvage(1888-1948), who in the mid-twenties became his own publisher and made a name for himself as an illustrator and decorator of considerable style. Chantecler, Rostand's play in four acts in verse, was performed for the first time in the Theatre de la Port Saint-Martin on February 7, 1910.
