Londoner Charles Lamb decided to use the pseudnym "Elia" for has regular essays in every issue of the "London Magazine, published from 1820 through 1825. The first batch was published in 1822 (dated 1823), while another batch--the last essays--appeared ten years later. Like the essays of Montaigne or E.B Whiite, these reflect life and times and universal ideas. Although techincally ex-library, this volume was in a library at a retirment home and circulated very little. Aside from the stamps on the enpapers and title page, the book is like new.

The author of the famous SPoon River Anthology (poems) decribes his life in Illinois, influences and struggles. Masters seldome met a woman he did nto fall for and his account of these romances is part of the charm of the book, as is his descriptions of farm, village, and city life from the last days of the 19th century through the 1920s and into the start of the depression. As csn be expected from a poet, there are some fine descriptins, especially of the people he meets. Masters was friends with many of the authors of the period, such as Theodore Dreiser. Although ex-library and rebound, the book itself is in excellent contidtion. There are several light stamps from the Pana (Illinois) libary on the edges of the pages and the title page. In the rebinding, the front and back forms have their margins squeezed. There are eleven excellent photographs of the author, his family, early homes, etc.

A wonderful tale of bank robbers in the 1920s and 1930s and of the U.S. Marshall who takes them out.

She was the wife of Frank Leslie and the heir to his publishing business which she developed into a paying concern from a state of precarious indebtedness. Cover is partly disconnected from pages and very faded, but all 450 pages are there, most with wonderful engravings of animals interspersed into the text. 8.5 by 11 trim.
