Coloured title illustration, 5 full page coloured illustrations plus numerous coloured text illustrations including 15 decorated initials all by Ardizzone. Lower corners just a touch rubbed, no inscriptions. Near Fine in good DUSTWRAPPER with wonderful coloured illustrations to both panels (dw: not price clipped, 40 mm (2") missing at tail of spine, 5 mm (¼") at head, a couple of tiny chips to lower edge of upper panel, 4 small chips to top edge of lower panel, couple tiny ones to lower edge, a little pale foxing to both panels). A tragic tale beautifully told and exquisitely illustrated. Torn between a great love and a great career Desbarollda finally chooses her art, whereupon her broken hearted lover chooses a horrible death. FIRST UK EDITION 1932, large 8vo, 250 x 165 mm, 9¾ x 6¼ inches, yellow cloth, red lettered upper cover and spine, pages: vii, 214. 3 beautiful colour plates, 10 exquisite black and white plates and 8 text illustrations. Tail of spine very slightly worn with 2 minute nicks to cloth, tiniest bump to corners, lower cover slightly unevenly faded, 1 or 2 very minor marks to cloth, erased pencil inscription on front endpaper, showing slightly, edges faintly foxed, occasional pale fox spot to margins. Very good plus copy (lacking dustwrapper). Author and artist of this delightful popular doll book were American. It first appeared in the US in 1929 with the subtitle: My First Five Hundred Years. French text, 8vo, approximately 255 x 165 mm, 10 x 6½ inches, original mounted photograph of Vidie as frontispiece, a few text illustrations, 408 pages plus 1 (Contents table), bound in contemporary half morocco, marbled sides, gilt dividing lines, raised bands with gilt rules and gilt lettering to spine, gilt top edges, marbled endpapers, silk marker. Very slight rubbing to 3 raised bands, upper corners slightly worn, frontispiece expertly reinserted on a tab, offsetting on title page, occasional slight pale foxing including on title page. Binding tight and firm. A very good copy of an uncommon book. Born in Nantes (France), Lucien Vidie (1805-1866) began his career as a lawyer but soon turned to engineering, particularly the design of steam engines.
