Description:
Dessau and Leipzig: [n.p.], 1784. FIRST EDITION. With 1 folding engraved plate, woodcut vignette head- and tailpieces. Original speckled boards; minor scuffing to extremities, otherwise an excellent copy with contemporary ownership inscription of V. Stein on title, and small library stamp of Joachim W. Voigt. First edition. The doctrine of infarctus had its origin with the Hesse-Homburg physician Johann Kämpf (d.1753) and his son of the same name (1726-87), who published the present "doctrine" of his father's. We won't go into a detailed description, but according to the author, "infarctus" (impacted faeces) is a thickening of the humors in the portal vessels and intestine, and the former becomes filled, stuffed and distended. He here writes of two kinds of "infarctus," the black-bilious and the mucous. This dangerous condition required certain remedial procedures in order for the patient to eliminate. One procedure called visceral-clyster became quite fashionable. Baas notes that other physicians… Read More

Description:
Leipzig: Felix Meiner, 1921. I: Third edition; II: Second edition. I: Original printed wrappers. A stellar copy, with none of the foxing normally found in this book. II: Original printed wrappers; also in excellent condition. I: Third edition of the textbook of logic that Kant used in his university lectures revised by Professor Kinkel in 1905. Kant had, since 1765, regularly given lectures on logic, though he never prepared his own handbook for publication. His notes and explanations (of, for the most part, Meier's logic textbook of 1752) were given to his colleague Gottlob Benjamin Jasche, who in 1800 published Immanuel Kant's Logic / Handbook for Lectures. Kinkel's edition begins with an introduction where he dwells a great deal on the relation between formal logic and transcendental logic, commenting and broadening the concepts which were presented in the Critique of pure reason. This edition has a very useful index of name and terms. II: Second edition of a collection of Kant's minor writings on… Read More

Description:
Frankfurt and Leipzig: [n.p.], 1792. Contemporary boards, worn; interior generally clean, with light browning on first few leaves and occasional spotting. Originally published in Königsberg in 1790, Kant asserts in this work that the problems of biology cannot be explained by mechanical causes alone. "All the phenomena of inanimate nature can be explained in terms of the motion of matter in space and enduring through time, while for living things such efficient [i.e., mechanical] causes are not enough -- they must be explained in terms of an end and thus require final causes in addition to efficient ones. In more modern terms, biology, for Kant, cannot in the final analysis be explained solely in terms of physics and chemistry" (DSB, VII, p. 232). The present copy is an unauthorized printing of Kant's third and final edition.Kant (1724-1804), considered the greatest philosopher of the eighteenth century, was fascinated with the foundations of science and made considerable contributions to the field.

Description:
Boston: Manning & Loring, 1796. Later edition. Contemporary calf, rebacked, spine label; interior generally browned because of paper stock. Signature of John J. Smith dated October 29, 1803 on the fly-leaf, remnants of a bookplate on the paste-down as well as a bookseller label (Leary of Philadelphia). English poet and writer Keate (1729-1797) chronicled this important and historically significant account of Captain Henry Wilson's 1783 shipwreck in the Pelew Islands, resulting in it being one of the main sources of early knowledge on the area. Keate pieced together this work utilizing Captain Wilson's journals and communications, documenting a first-hand narration of Wilson and his crew's experience. Beginning with their departure, the author describes reaching shore after the accident and their warm welcome from the natives. This work helped reinforce the idea of the "noble savage," and is regarded and one of the most popular eighteenth century books on the Pacific.

London & Cambridge: Geo Strahan & G. Thurlbourn, 1741. Sixth edition. With 12 folding plates. Engraved title vignette. Contemporary calf; some light browning and foxing. Ownership inscription on first fly-leaf. Sixth edition (first published in 1701) of Keill's lecture notes on Newtonian mechanics. Also included is a chapter in support of Huygens' approximation of the quadrature, in which he located the center of gravity of a segment of a circle. Keill (1671-1721), a famous mathematician and astronomer, was a friend and early champion of Isaac Newton and his Principia. He was a lecturer and the first to teach natural philosophy by experiments in a mathematical manner at Oxford. Berlin: Julius Springer, 1929. FIRST EDITION. With 30 text figures. Original publisher's yellow cloth, a bit rubbed; ownership signature dated London, 1930 on fly-leaf. A very good copy. First edition. Kellogg was a professor of mathematics known for his work on potential theory. His work here presents a very good overview of the study of harmonic functions, or potential theory. It includes much of the past development of the theory of partial differential equations and its applications to "classical" mathematical physics and is most important in its relations to functions of a complex variable, but also continues to introduce readers to new issues (of the time) in mathematical problems. Chapters include the force of gravity; fields of force; the divergence theorem; properties of Newtonian potentials at points of free space and at points occupied by masses; potentials as solutions of Laplace's equation, electrostatics; harmonic functions; fundamental existence theorems; and the logarithmic potential,… Read More
