Postenkill, NY: Edition Kaldewey, 1992. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Folio. 20pp. One of seven copies, the smallest limitation of the Press. Images pulped into the paper show the outline of a face in red and, in blue, the Chinese name of Bun-Ching Lam. The accompanying text is a short, but poetic, statement about the persistent growing of trees. As stated in the colophon, the edition was meant to have been bound by Jean de Gonet, who suffered a motorcycle accident and could not complete the project. Instead, the sheets are held loosely inside paper covers, themselves held inside ground aluminum covers, backed in pink leather, and with a glass doll's eye over each rivet. Los Angeles: Kaldewey Press, 1990. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Octavo. From an edition of 40, this is one of 20 copies on multi-colored paper, signed by the author. A lecture on the contemporary artist's book, which Kaldewey gave across the country at centers of art like the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Getty Center in Los Angeles. In both his lecture and in the creation of the book itself, Kaldewey explores the interplay of images, design, and text. Printed on a variety of color papers, including sheets of blue and purple irridescent paper. Some are painted with bold bands of color. Bound by Christian Zwang in ebony wood backed in green morocco, with wrinkled endpapers. On the front board is an diagonally-placed irridescent paper label with the title. Housed in a snakeskin clamshell box with the title and date stamped in metallic blue on the spine. Very fine. (von Lucius, pp. 78-81).

A retelling of a Japanese folktale, lustrously illustrated with leaves of watercolors interleaved with uncut sheets of tissue. Stab-bound with rivets in red, blue, and yellow. Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1994. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Three booklets and three hanging scrolls, housed together in a clamshell box. One of forty copies. With silk screened images on translucent paper and text in three languages and several colors. Signed by the publisher/designer/author, Gunnar Kaldewey. In this work, Kaldewey explores three representative buildings notable for their height, one of which no longer exists: The Longhua Pagoda of China, the World Trade Center in New York City, and the Cathedral of Cologne, Germany. The Longhua Pagoda is accompanied by discussion of its construction and its architectural elements, while the World Trade Center is described using statistics and numbers. The text accompanying the Cathedral of Cologne highlights its centuries-long building process and survival. An extremely fine copy of what now has become a memorial for September 11th in its own way. Illustrated with ten paper pulp images of Jewish symbols, such as the Star of David, the Torah pointer, and the shofar. The text of the Song of Songs is printed in the original Hebrew using Frank-Ruehl Hebrew type. Typical of Kaldewey's work, the text is arranged freely on the page to complement the images. The chapter numbers are printed in dark purple, which complements the yellow, violet, green, and turquoise used in the illustrations. The English translation is printed in red on architect's vellum—a slick contrast to the textured handmade paper on which the Hebrew is printed. This deluxe edition is bound by Christian Zwang of Hamburg in red painted leather, with a title plaque made of etched sterling silver. Housed in a gray cloth box, gilt-titled to spine. Very fine. Illustrated with seventeen linecut monoprints, appearing as rubbings or mottled silhouettes of leaves, buds, and tree branches, and printed over hand-colored backgrounds of blue and green on the volume's seven sheets of heavily textured brown Japanese paper. Folded in thirds and bound with a Brazilian rosewood spine. Housed in a wooden box with printed illustration on lid and wrapped in two linen ties. Very fine. (von Lucius, pp. 70-73).

(Düsseldorf: Kaldewey Press, 1982. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Thin oblong folio. (26)pp. From an edition of 60, this is one of thirty in German. Each leaf is printed on thin aluminum with illustrations of clouds, the letterpress text printed in blue above the clouds. This innovative and effective conjunction of images and words is presented in a highly sophisticated manner, using wafer-thin aluminum sheets to evoke the lightness and tone of cloudy sky, colored with tints for effect. Bound by Christian Zwang of Hamburg in aluminum boards with a stainless steel hinge. A very fine copy in publisher's gray cloth dropback box. Laid in is a folding sheet of clear parchment titled "The Cloud Performance" published in New York in 1987 which gives an English translation of the work and is signed by Kaldewey and the composer Bun-Ching Lam. A cleverly fan-shaped catalog of antiquarian fans present at the 1981 International Antiquarian Book Fair in California. Bound in white blind-embossed paper. In contrast to his previous work, 15 Kyoto Gardens, Kaldewey focuses on the phenomenon of Japan's gambling halls and Pachinko parlors. This was the first book of the Kaldewey Press to utilize the technology of the computer, Photoshop, and an Epson printer, in creating the color illustrations. With an accompanying audio CD of the background noises of voices, coins, and music found in a Pachinko arcade. Mint in chemise and slipcase. (von Lucius, pp. 102-103).

This book is inspired by the notion of "nature as art," and was created after Kaldewey spent three months living in a traditional Japanese wooden house in Kyoto, studying the art of the Japanese garden as the seasons changed from winter to summer. The first text page poetically states: "Books are like gardens that one can carry/around; gardens are like books that one can/experience, promenade through or get lost..." Kaldewey has captured the finest details of nature in his prints of lime and silver, with borders in black. Bound as loose sheets on aqua-colored cotton rag paper made by Gangolf Ulbricht, interleaved with thin white Japanese paper and thin plastic sheets splatter-painted in blue and green. Poestenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1991. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Two extreme oblong 16mos. (14); (16)pp., leporello. Each is one of 40 copies, signed by the artist/printer, Gunnar Kaldewey. Kaldewey offers a poetic, intimate encounter with and a nostalgic history of one of America's most visited and inspiring rivers. The Hudson River was followed a year later by Volume 2: Der Rhein, and both parts were dedicated to John Cage. The text of the first volume is printed in green, with occasional red and yellow, and tells the history of the river, including Mohawk poems and Dutch text. The abstract illustrations throughout are based on enlarged photographs, and evoke rhythmic water flow. The entire book can be unfolded to create a long panorama. The second volume is, fittingly, much more European in focus, and favors historical images over natural ones. This marks the very first book printed in Poestenkill, an event commemorated with a loose transparency of the tower of Poestenkill, the site of the press, before the title page. It is also one of the few Kaldewey books that do not use Helvetica, and the only book from the press employing more than one typeface. Each page represents an experimental printing using a different letter of the alphabet. Bound by Christian Zwang in full soft pink calf, with stamped gilt letters playfully arranged across both covers. Few unobtrusive light scratches to the delicate leather, else fine, housed in publisher's black silk covered box. (von Lucius, pp. 62-63).

Hamburg: Kaldewey Press, 1978. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Folio. One of fifty copies of Kaldewey's second artist's book and the first book bearing the Kaldewey Press imprint. This copy warmly inscribed from Kaldewey to "friends of the Kaldewey Press for many years" on the colophon page and dated "15/6/95." Illustrated with color Xerox copies, color mylar overlays, and found art to document Kaldewey's first trip to New York. While there, Kaldewey shot an 8mm movie, stills of which are shown here as Xerox reproductions. Very fine in black paper over boards with a subway token mounted to the front cover. Signed by the author/artist/printer, Gunnar Kaldewey. With numerous monochromatic and two-tone illustrations. Written, illustrated, designed, and printed by Gunnar Kaldewey as Volume 5 of the Kaldewey Press series. In 1977, Kaldewey printed New York, his first book about America. Ten years later, California Time was published as a counterpoint to that volume. In it, Kaldewey offers his observations about California's landscapes, both natural and manmade, in prose that ranges from playful to bleak. He sees the landscape with an artist's eye, describing the "simmering city" and the "juicy orange of the West." These verbal images are illustrated in Kaldewey's stylized manner, including one double-page spread showing the Pacific Ocean in aqua and gray on a transparency. For example: "I for Italic/ A type that is based/ On a humanist script/ In the renaissance taste." The endpapers are illustrated with pictures of six different printing presses. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Company, 1898. MacDougall, W. B. (William Brown). Small quarto. (55)pp. Eight woodcut illustrations and each page with black floral borders. A fine rendering of John Keats's poem adapted from Boccacio's Decameron. In it, a young woman engaged to marry a nobleman falls in love with a commoner. When her brothers discover their relationship, they murder the commoner. Isabella learns of their crime in a dream, and, distraught, exhumes the body and buries the head in the titular pot of basil, over which she perpetually weeps. This version is sumptuously illustrated with black borders and romantic imagery of Isabella, her lover, her brothers, and their lush countryside. The effect is pleasingly nostalgic, matching the sympathy of Keats's poem. Bound in green cloth over boards with rich gilt tooling to spine and upper cover. Minor general wear to exterior, including three red blotches to lower cover. Overall, a near fine copy with a clean interior.
