Philadelphia: Lea & Febiger, 1921. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. Very Good+. Fourth Edition. Hardcover. "The first comprehensive treatise on hand surgery, and the classic work on tendon and bursal hand spaces relevant to management of hand infections." Kanavel's "monograph on Infections of the Hand became a classic of American surgical literature. Boyes, Shoulders of Giants, pp. 170-72. Orr 823. Overall, a very handsome copy of a rather uncommon treatise. Baltimore, MD: The Williams & Wilkins Company, 1937. First Edition. Original Wraps. Very Good+ in Wraps. First Edition. Original Wraps. Reprints of classic texts, with English translations where necessary. Includes biographic notes and bibliographies. "Many doctors are not interested in medical history, that is, in medical history as it has been served to them up to the present time. This is a sad and unnatural state of affairs. Our debt to the past was thus expressed by Claude Bernard: "We stand upon the intellectual shoulders of those medical giants of bygone days and, because of the help they afford us, we are able to see a little more clearly than they were able to do." Medical Classics aims to awaken the interest of all medical workers in the historical side of their profession. The work will be useful, not merely ornamental." [from "A Preface Concerning Aims and Policy" in V1N1]. Light shelf/edge wear, overlapped wraps rumpled at edges, light toning to spines, else tight, bright, and unmarred.…

Northampton, MA: Dan Kelm, 2018. Limited Edition. Fine in Fine Case. Limited Edition. The creation of Templum Elementorum (Sanctuary of the Elements) was initiated by an invitation in 1995 to produce a book for the Smithsonian Institution Library exhibition Science and the Artist's Book. Inspired by Biringuccio's De la pirotechnia (On working with fire), first published in 1540, Templum Elementorum is a stylized version of the alchemical furnace known as the Tower of Athanor, as pictured in Biringuccio's book. "Athanor" refers to the "undying" fire which is achieved by the use of the self-feeding fuel hopper at the center of the furnace. Kelm created a book sculpture comprised of four glass cylinders and metal bindings â one for each of the elements. Together they represent a furnace within which the four alchemical elements are operating â earth bath, water bath, air furnace, and fire box. Colors, symbols, words, and metals contained on the cylinders and in the bindings all correspond to…
