Edward Kater (1816-1866), photographer. He joined the Calotype Club in the 1840s, becoming a vice president of the Photographic Society when it was formed. Elphinstone, In HMS Monarch, arrived in England on 3 January 1797 as conqueror of the Cape and the captor of the Dutch fleet. George Keith Elphinstone, Viscount Keith (1746-1823), admiral, fought in the American War of Independence, and commanded the expedition which took Cape Town (1795-97). In December 1798 he was sent to the Mediterranean as second in command to St.Vincent. Keith landed the army in Aboukir Bay (1801). From 1803 to 1807 he was commander-in-chief in the North Sea, with particular responsibility for coastal defence (including the Channel) in the event of a French invasion. From 1812 he was commander-in-chief of the Channel Fleet, and had a line of cruisers along the French coast at the time of Waterloo.

To which is added an Appendix on Oriental measures of time (London, 1832). He was also instrumental in the establishment of the Imperial system of measurement through the Weights and Measures Act 1824. He was for many years master of a successful private school called the Mercantile School in Finsbury Square.

Royal Geographical Society, 3 July 1890. 1 page 7 x 4 inches, in good condition. Sir John Scott Keltie F.R.G.S. (1840 1927), Scottish geographer, best known for his work with the Royal Geographic Society. He joined the Royal Geographic Society in 1883, and quickly became heavily involved in its activities. He was appointed its Inspector of Geographical Education in 1884, and undertook a thorough review of the state of geography education in the UK, producing an influential 150-page report. In 1885 he became the Society's librarian, and upon the death of Henry Walter Bates in 1892, succeeded him as Assistant Secretary of the Society (in effect its Secretary, as the official Secretary was a figurehead from the nobility). Among his first tasks was the relaunching of the Proceedings of the Royal Geographic Society as the Geographical Journal in 1893, in order to appeal to a wider audience. He was officially given the title of Secretary in 1896.

Edward Vaughan Hyde Kenealy QC (1819-1880), Irish barrister and writer, best remembered as counsel for the Tichborne claimant and the eccentric and disturbed conduct of the trial that led to his ruin. In 1866, Kenealy wrote The Book of God: the Apocalypse of Adam-Oannes, an unorthodox theological work in which he claimed that he was the "twelfth messenger of God", descended from Jesus Christ and Genghis Khan.
