A neat name on the front paste-down and slightly marked end-papers (likely caused by the glue used in the manufacture of the book) otherwise VG indeed. The D/W is slightly soiled, frayed to the top edge and with a closed tear extending from the foot of the front joint into the spine panel. This has been neatly re-inforced on the verso with archival repair tape. SIGNED ON THE HALF-TITLE BY THE AUTHOR AS "MAYLING SOONG CHIANG". Scans invited.

Overall a VG copy with some minor mottling to the cloth, slight lifting to front board, some neat manuscript entries and neat contemporary gift inscription dated 1881 to the presentation leaf. This copy accords with all the first edition points in Schuster & Engen 39(1a). In the VERY RARE pre-paid beige-coloured D/W designed to send the book through the post. This Book Post wrapper has printed lettering on the front panel 'BOOK POST for the United Kingdom, Threehalfpence and the title below with dotted lines for the address. Mild foxing to the end-papers otherwise a near fine (or better) copy in like D/W slightly darkenened to the spine and with a hint of creasing at the spine tips. Publisher's Note tipped in.
