Near very good in blue cloth, sunned to the spine and the edges of the boards, a few spots to the covers and text block edges, end papers browned, the pages are bright and clean. Lovingly inscribed "To my wife for her to relax with in our home, From her adoring Harry. 16 Nov '48". This book comes from the collection of the scientist and pioneer birth-control campaigner Marie Stopes (1880-1958) which was inherited by her son the philosopher Harry Stopes-Roe (1924-2014) and sold following the death of his widow Mary Stopes-Roe in May of this year. Mary was herself an academic and author, the daughter of the engineer and inventor of the bouncing bomb, Sir Barnes Wallis. 1947

With laid in [1TLS] letter from Marjorie McIntosh to Daphne Du Maurier expressing her appreciation of Du Maurier's novels, Golden Lads and The Winding Stair, which concern a branch of the Cooke family of Gidea Hall. McIntosh encloses copies of 3 other academic papers on the Cookes. The Fall of a Gentle Tudor Family, Henry E Huntington Library 1978; and Some New Gentry in Early Tudor Essex and Sir Hercules Francis Cook, both Essex archaeological Society 1977. Karl Heinz Wahren, At This Moment Orchesterkonzert in 3 Satzen, 1973/74, Partitur, Bote & Bock, Berlin; large folio in card wrappers, Wahren's comments on the work laid down onto verso of front cover. This score is from a large collection of scores that belonged to the conductor Sir Colin Davis, many annotated and used in performance, almost all from the post-war period and including at least two examples of scores from which Davis conducted the work's premier: Thea Musgrave's Clarinet Concerto (Davis was himself originally a clarinettist by training) and Malcolm Williamson's The Stone Wall which Davis premiered at the Last Night of the Proms in September 1971. John Kaye Charlesworth has written in the top right corner of the printed wrappers: 'W M Bromehead with the author's regards' Charlesworth was Professor of Geology at Belfast. The text is complete although the foldout map at the rear has become detached. The wrappers are slightly discoloured. Very good, wrappers a little rubbed and marked, illustrated with black and white photographs and architectural drawings. Ownership inscription on dedication page. We have recently acquired the library of Harry Horlock Stringer who was a leading British potter at the old Fulham Pottery in the 1950's where he concentrated on earthenware. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. Stringer experimented with his own glazes and firing techniques, and wrote a book on Raku, becoming a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association, editing the association's journal for a time and exhibiting widely as well as lecturing at home and abroad. A set of four postcards (6 x 9 inches) by the artist Frank Kelly Freas of images which were used as cover designs for the first paperback editions of science fiction novels published by DAW Books Inc. in the early 1970's. Two are signed and dated 1978 on the image, these being Time Travel Trap from Dinosaur Beach by Keith Laumer, and Hazardous Duty from Pandora's Planet by Christopher Anvil. The second two are signed on the margin: Closeup from The Telzey Toy by James H Schmitz, and The Art Critics from The Light that Never Was by Lloyd Biggle.
