Lovingly inscribed "To my wife for her to relax with in our home, From her adoring Harry. 16 Nov '48". This book comes from the collection of the scientist and pioneer birth-control campaigner Marie Stopes (1880-1958) which was inherited by her son the philosopher Harry Stopes-Roe (1924-2014) and sold following the death of his widow Mary Stopes-Roe in May of this year. Mary was herself an academic and author, the daughter of the engineer and inventor of the bouncing bomb, Sir Barnes Wallis. 1947

Karl Heinz Wahren, At This Moment Orchesterkonzert in 3 Satzen, 1973/74, Partitur, Bote & Bock, Berlin; large folio in card wrappers, Wahren's comments on the work laid down onto verso of front cover. This score is from a large collection of scores that belonged to the conductor Sir Colin Davis, many annotated and used in performance, almost all from the post-war period and including at least two examples of scores from which Davis conducted the work's premier: Thea Musgrave's Clarinet Concerto (Davis was himself originally a clarinettist by training) and Malcolm Williamson's The Stone Wall which Davis premiered at the Last Night of the Proms in September 1971. Most of the scores are full size performance versions, several very large indeed in order to accommodate the scoring of a post-Schoenberg orchestra. John Kaye Charlesworth has written in the top right corner of the printed wrappers: 'W M Bromehead with the author's regards' Charlesworth was Professor of Geology at Belfast. The text is complete although the foldout map at the rear has become detached. The wrappers are slightly discoloured. This pamphlet forms part of a large geological and natural historical collection recently acquired by Modernfirsteditions. Very Good 1939

A fine copy in a fine jacket of the third impression of Keeler's autobiography. The Profumo affair in which Keeler was embroiled was a major scandal in twentieth-century British politics. After lying about his affair with Keeler in Parliament, Profumo resigned, contributing to the demise of Harold Macmillan's Conservative government. Separately, Keeler herself became synonymous with the changing values of Britain in the 1960s. In this book she gives her version of her life. A set of four postcards (6 x 9 inches) by the artist Frank Kelly Freas of images which were used as cover designs for the first paperback editions of science fiction novels published by DAW Books Inc. in the early 1970's. Two are signed and dated 1978 on the image, these being Time Travel Trap from Dinosaur Beach by Keith Laumer, and Hazardous Duty from Pandora's Planet by Christopher Anvil. The second two are signed on the margin: Closeup from The Telzey Toy by James H Schmitz, and The Art Critics from The Light that Never Was by Lloyd Biggle. The cards are Fine in condition, retaining their bright colours and protected by cellophane envelopes. Fine 1974

With the errata slip. Smart green publisher's cloth binding with dark green coated endpapers, clean fresh text throughout, pp512 plus four pages of adverts at the end. This third volume in Kelvin's Nature Series was actually published before the second volume and each is a stand alone publication which forms part of the final sequence. Thomson was a giant of nineteenth century science who did important work in the mathematical analysis of electricity and formulation of the first and second laws of thermodynamics as well as unifying the discipline of physics.
