Additionally, SIGNED by first baseman Joe Adcock, also on the front endpaper. The volume is rubbed with light abrasions on the edges. The dust jacket has shallow clips on three of the flap corners (but not the top front where the price of $3.50 is intact), is deeply spine sunned, chipped on the edges (to a maximum depth of 1" at the top of the spine and rear joint), and has many closed tears, some soiling and small thin strips of edge reinforcing tape on the outside of the jacket.

The priuce clipped dust jacket, protected in a sleeve, is edgfe rubbed to include chips (to a depth of 1/2" on thre top front joint), closed tears (longest of 3/4" on the front panel), wrinkles, and abrasions.

The volume is bumped, with abrasions, on the corners and spine ends, has bubbling and soiling on the facing panels, and the soft flexible boards are turned inward towards each other at the folds. There is part of a dustjacket (?) from a Max Brand biography of Franz Kafka pasted to the front endpaper and a pencilled inscription is found on the second endpaper. The text leaves are in excellent condition. The unclipped dust jacket, protected in a sleeve, is edgeworn with tears and chips (to a depth of 3/4" on the spine crown cutting out the part of the first "K" in Kafka). There are also tears and chips to the folds and joints, and reinforcing tape to the jacket verso. First American printing.

Small bookseller's info is stamped on the rear pastedown. The mylar sleeved dust jacket is uniformly corner clipped (price of $2.50 is intact), chipped (including a 2" x 3/4" piece at the top of the rear panel near the fold), abraded on the joints and folds to include some loss on the front fold, and there is a long closed tear along the rear joint which cuts horizontally across the medallion on the spine.

The volume is lightly perimeter and spine sunned and there are a series of sproadic stains near the bottom edges of the boards, pastedowns, and endpapers caused by an old Brodart sleeve. There is also a bit of soiling to the rear board. The unclipped dust jacket, with a new protective sleeve, is moderately rubbed with scratches and abrasions, and there is considerable edge wear to include abrasions, wrinkles, closed tears, and nicks. Winner of the 1956 Pulitzer Prize in fiction.

The volume has 25 plates in color (most tissue guarded, although some of the tissues are loose and wrinkled) and 19 black and white drawings and pictures. Four of the the color plates fold out.
