Description:
New York, 1946. Typed Letter Signed in pencil, one page 8-3/8 x 10-3/4", to Mr. Wilson, on Helen Keller's personal letterhead of 15 West 16th Street, New York, dated February 21, 1946. Traces of quarter folds, a bit of yellowing along folds, traces of two paper clip marks on back, else fine. An eloquent letter announcing the formation of the "Helen Keller Committee on the Deaf-blind" formed by the American Foundation for the Blind and asking for his support. Miss Keller writes, "Try to imagine, if you can, the anguish and horror you would experience bowed down by the twofold weight of blindness and deafness, with no hope of emerging from an utter isolation....Even work, man's Divine heritage -- work that can bind up broken hearts -- would be lost to you." Miss Keller's devotion to the suffering of others is evident, making this a wonderful example of her compassion.

Description:
Forest Hills, LI, 1925. To Mr. DeLaitre, typed letter signed, one page, 10-3/8" x 6-3/4", 27 lines, signed in pen at the bottom, "Helen Keller" to Mr. DeLaitre. Evidence of quarter folds, else fine. Helen Keller (1880-1968), noted American lecturer and author, was blind and deaf from the age of two. She spent her life raising money for the blind and other social causes, especially working for The American Foundation for the Blind. In this early letter (she had graduated from Radcliffe in 1904), she announces that Dr. Henry van Dyke, as National Chairman of the American Foundation for the Blind, is "endeavoring to secure an Endowment Fund." She informs Mr. DeLaitre that she will be visiting his city soon to speak at "one or two meetings" and expresses a desire to meet him. This is fine letter, written early in Miss Keller's extraordinary career and is signed in pen -- quite unusual as her signatures are usually in pencil.

Size of photograph: 8 inches x 10 inches; matted and framed to overall size of 13 inches x 14 inches; photograph a bit rumpled at corners with some spotting. Still a lovely image of Miss Keller at age 59 seated on large chair with "Go-Go" seated at her feet, one of her hands on his collar and the other across his back. She is smiling and beautifully dressed in suit with fur shawl and hat with large cameo pin at her throat. "Go-go" is almost smiling as well - turned to face the camera with his gentle eyes seeing what his owner cannot. Helen Keller (1880-1968), noted American lecturer and author, blind and deaf from the age of two, was an international celebrity in a day and time before television and international movie distribution. Little Girl, Don't Cry!" is a musical adaptation of the poet James Whitcomb Riley's poem "A Life-Lesson". Fanny Snow Knowlton's (1859-1926) arrangement of this popular Riley poem, published in 1891 by Brainard's Sons Company of Chicago, was one the earliest arrangements written by a woman. An American composer, Knowlton was writing during a period of great opportunity for female composers. From 1890 to 1930 scores and musical compositions by women were being published in record numbers in the United States. For her arrangements, Knowlton selected popular poems such as Riley's "A Life-Lesson" and Samuel Minton Peck's "The Grapevine Swing" and… Read More
