Description:
Jackson likely writes to Martin S. Garretson, (1866-1955), known for his study of and advocacy for the American bison, also depicted in Garretson's moving photogravures. Jackson begins the letter to Garretson. "Otherwise a 'Sinful Maverick': I had intended delivering this little picture personally...but an urgent request from Wyoming to be out there for some sort of an affair this coming week, will keep me so busy...that I must rely upon the mail to do the work for me...." Jackson then hopes his picture would find, "a place among the other 'old timers' ...." He signs, "W. H. Jackson," and in parentheses adds, "(Pawnee Bill?)" Garretson was called the "Sinful Maverick," and given the age difference between the two men, Jackson would be the old timer. From 1870 to 1878 Jackson was the official photographer for the United States Geological and Geographical Survey of the Territories. His photographs of the natural beauty of northwestern Wyoming, taken during the Hayden survey expedition of 1871, were… Read More

Johns writes to actress Ruth Ford using red felt tip pen on the address side of the card as well as the message side. He draws a wavy line down the center as if to cover the vertical type separating the two sides. "Dear Ruth, I've just got back into the city & find things a bit confused - I may be moving into a new place this [month crossed out] week. I'll call you about 'the Beard' next week. I would love to take you to see it if my housing problem is not completely out of hand by then. I hope it will not be but I try to learn to be like Mayor Lindsay, 'Neither optimistic - nor pessimistic.' As ever, Jasper." The post card was mailed in an envelope addressed to Ford by Johns in the same red ink. John Lindsay was Mayor of New York at the time. Michael McClure's play, "The Beard," first opened… Read More

Autograph Letter Signed, two separate 4to pages, Sept. 29,1989. Mitchell was himself a New York School Abstract Expressionist artist. The third letter in the group was written by Fred Mitchell to Johns, August 21, 1992, referring to John Cage's composition, "Europera," soon after Cage died in August 1992. After offering news of family and friends, Johns writes in the September 29 letter, "If you can ever track down that photo of my ‘Construction with a Toy Piano' and Bob Rauschenberg ‘Paint Cans' painting on the walls of the Tanager Gallery… Read More

OLLIE JOHNSTON Letters are rare. He wrote three of the letters to fans referring to his work on Disney's, "The Jungle Book," based on Rudyard Kipling's stories of the same name. The letters range in dates between 1980-1983. The outstanding letter in this small group is a Typed Letter Signed on "Walt Disney presents The Jungle Book" stationery, 4to, Burbank CA, Feb. 23, 1980. The printed color illustrations on the stationery show the main characters of the film. Johnston writes to Ms. Scott, "I am enclosing under separate cover some enlargements from the "Jungle Book" film. Most of the Baloo pictures are taken from scenes that I animated...I also did the little girl and Mowgli...I am glad that your class likes the character of Baloo. He was one of my all-time favorites to work with...when I did the scene of Baloo and Bagheera dancing off into the sunset at the end of the picture, I was quite sad. I knew that I would never draw them again...." He signs in red pencil, "Ollie Johnston." Johnston writes… Read More
