Description:
Boston, Massachusetts: J. T. and E. Buckingham, 1832. First Edition. Hardcover. Good minus. This scarce original edition is offered despite problems of condition. 6 issues bound as one volume, not including original wraps or advertisements. Octavo, 10" tall, [2] + 620 + 4 engraved plate pages, quarter cloth over boards. A good copy only, given that the covers and fly-leaves are loose, the cloth back strip is partially missing, the boards are edge worn scuffed and worn through at the fore-corner tips--BUT the interior is in very good condition, paper clean, supple (pre-civil war paper was of a generally higher quality) only lightly yellowed, and relatively unfoxed. Still a good reading copy of this mostly original compendium of the culture in the middle of the 19th Century. A period time-capsule of the intellectual state of mind.

London, England: Fortune Press, 1948. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Octavo, 7 3/4" tall, 95 pages, deckled edges black quarter cloth over black boards. A very good, clean, neat hardcover edition overall, with boards shelf-worn through at fore-corner tips; hinges and binding solid, paper clean and paper lightly yellowed with some slight foxing to the endpapers. In a very good, moderately worn dust jacket, lightly soiled with one significant 1/4" chip at the top of the flap fold (internally taped), and with the original price. Dust jacket illustration evidently by Archie Jarman. "This volume, which covers the war years, introduces a new and authentic voice into contemporary poetry. Miss Jarman is equally at home in modern and traditional forms. Her work has the distinction -- rare among women poets -- of combining scientific curiosity with deep spiritual awareness." So sayeth the jacket flap.
