Single sheet, printed on both sides, in 5 columns of dense text, and employing large display type at the head. Signed in type at the end by Andrew Jackson, December 1, 1834. Old fold lines, some browning along folds, old tears neatly repaired (affecting a few words), a few small holes. President Jackson's State of the Union message to both Houses of Congress at the opening of their session. He reports on the success of U.S. diplomatic relations with various countries of Europe and Latin America, aside from some difficulties over a treaty with France. He reports a positive balance in the Treasury. "Free from public debt, at peace with all the world, and with no complicated interests to consult in our intercourse with foreign Powers, the present may be hailed as that epoch in our history the most favorable for the settlement of those principles in our domestic policy, which shall be best calculated to give… Read More

Description:
[NP]: American and Herald Extra, 1832. Newspaper broadside, in six columns, 56 x 39.5 cm. Rebacked with slight damage showing along old folds. Inscribed on verso to Capt. S.T. Northam, Newport R.I., from a person (name illegible), likely also a resident of a city in R.I. Northam was the President of the Savings Bank of Newport. The charter of the Bank of the United States was due to expire in 1836, but President Jackson failed to mention it in his inaugural address. However, in his first annual message to Congress he opposed the existing charter, favoring one with exceedingly limited powers designed to avoid constitutional issues. "The ideas expressed in [t]his message therefore seem unnecessarily crude, and are hard to account for. There is much reason to suspect that they were inspired by Van Buren and that they represent New York's opposition to the Philadelphia bank." --DAB. When Henry Clay and Nicholas Biddle, president of the Bank, forced a congressional vote on the recharter, they knew… Read More

[Washington, Pa, 1828. Broadside. 45 x 29 cm. Text in four columns, signed in type by A. Lacock at Spring Dale, [Pa.], June 28, 1828, at end, along with a printed note: "Let us read this and then lend it to our neighbors." Docketted on verso: "Lacock v Jackson 1828." Paper uniformly browned, some faint old staining, ink note on verso bleeds through, slight printers error at a fold affecting a few letters. Not in AMERICAN IMPRINTS. OCLC lists a copy at Michigan, with the following catalogue note: "An attack upon Jackson's conduct in the Seminole War. Lacock had conducted an investigation of Jackson's conduct at the time." Lacock investigated Jackson as member of the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania, issuing a report in 1818 (Sabin 38471) in which he concluded that Jackson had lied repeatedly in an attempt to justify his actions. He says in the present piece that Jackson "delighted to dwell with composure scenes of blood and carnage...." After leaving the Senate Lacock returned to western Pennsylvania. A… Read More

This printing apparently not in American Imprints. Not in "Threads of History." Not recorded on OCLC (which does locate a single copy, at the Library of Virginia, for a larger printing on silk, with the imprint "Washington City: United States' Telegraph"; another copy of the larger edition is held at the Library of Congress and at least two others have sold at auction in the past decade). Description:
New York: Lith & Pub by N Currier, 2 Spruce St., NY, 1830. Color lithograph portrait of Andrew Jackson framed by a thin double-rule, 11 3/8 x 9 inches on a larger sheet, 18 3/4 x 13 1/2 inches, the president seated at his desk, his right hand over papers, his left cradling his sword. Jackson (1767-1845; 7th President of the United States, 1829-1837), born in either North or South Carolina and elected president from Tennessee, was a hero of the War of 1812, famously defeating the British at the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. As president, Jackson quelled the Nullification movement in South Carolina, dismantled the Second Bank of the United States, and became the only president to completely pay off the national debt. He is best known, however, for his efforts to relocate eastern Indian tribes west of the Mississippi and the resultant "Trail of Tears." Richly colored, a very good example. Some browning and soiling in the margins, one inch on bottom margin faded, short closed tear at left margin, not… Read More

Description:
Washington, [DC]: Printed at the Office of Jonathan Elliot, Pennsylvania Avenue, 1828. 22 cm. [2], 3-32 pp. Disbound. A fairly crisp copy, but fore-edge cropped close, shaving a small amount of text on pp. 5-8 still readable. Howes J11. Cohen 13619 - "An anti-Jackson campaign document, comprising a reprint, with commentary, of the documents published in the same year as House Report no. 140, 20th Congress, 1st session under title: Tennessee militiamen." The two presidential campaigns pitting John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson are considered to be among the dirtiest in American history. Jackson's character was the principal target of the anti-Jackson forces and the present incident, dating from 1815 in the War of 1812, together with the alleged adultery of Andrew and Rachel Jackson in the early 1790's, were their principal weapons. The campaign worked in 1824 but failed this time around.

1832. Written on folio sheet, 32 x 41 cm., with 26 voters names listed down right hand side and a small extra piece (19 x 10 cm.) pinned on with names of voters 27-41. Eighteen electors are listed across the top, nine for Jackson and nine for Clay, along with the tally for each. Under the section for School Commissioner, only one person is listed as running (Alpha Frisby), the rest of the column has been cut away, probably blank usable paper. Old fold lines, some separations, a tender copy. The electors for Andrew Jackson defeated Henry Clay's handily, 35 to 5. Certified by five people including two judges. An interesting piece of voting ephemera in the 1832 election that of course Jackson won. No hanging chad.
