Description:
Colorado Springs, CO: Denver & Rio Grande R.R., 1895. Cabinet card. Albumen photograph [10 cm x 13 cm] / [4" x 5"] on a dark gray mount [18 cm x 20 cm] / [7" x 8"] Blind stamp at the center of the lower margin. Denver & Rio Grande R.R. backstamp. Minor discoloring to the upper right corner of the mount. Title in the negative. Nice view of the original Saltair. Founded by Mormon leaders and the Salt Lake, Garfield and Western Railway, as an alternative to the "Gentile" resorts on the Great Salt Lake, Saltair has been the most successful of all of these resorts, and now in its third incarnation, after the previous were both destroyed by fires. Saltair also played a starring role in the horror film, 'Carnival of Souls.' The Denver & Rio Grande was founded by visionary General William Palmer in 1870 as the nation's first narrow-gauge railroad, Colorado's 'Baby Road' became a vital link in the national transportation system.

Salt Lake City, UT: Earth First!, 1981. Bumper sticker [9 cm x 31 cm] / [3.5" x 12.25"] White stock printed in green ink. Unused. Fine. Earth First! was an environmental group founded by Dave Foreman, Ron Kezar, Mike Roselle, Howie Wolke, and Bart Koehler in 1980 as an alternative to more mainstream groups such as the Sierra Club and the Wilderness Society. EF! describes itself as "pure, hard-line, radical," and advocates supplementing lobbying practices with more direct tactics such as "demonstrations" and "confrontations." In addition to supporting traditional conservation, EF! calls for the re-creation of wilderness through the construction of a national system of ecological preserves in which dams, roads, and other traces of human activity will be removed. "No Compromise in Defense of Mother Earth." Rare.

During his lengthy career, Jackson photographed numerous views of the West between Nebraska and California, from cliff dwellings to industrial urban centers. This process permitted the mass production of color postcards, prints, and albums for sale to the American market. In 1897, landscape photographer, William Henry Jackson, joined the firm, adding Jackson's thousands of negatives to the…

Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1900. Berkeley: University of California Press, 1941. First Edition. 290pp. Octavo [22 cm] Green cloth. Near fine/Near fine. Bookplate attached to rear flap of jacket (not attached to rear pastedown). "What you hold in your hands is the San Francisco book you have always hoped someone would have the genius to contrive. You have never seen its like. It isn't the time-worn tale you have read as history or fiction. It is the very life, the eating and drinking, the shooting, the loving, the laughter and tears, of the city you know must have been there in the Heroic Age but that no one, until now, has conjured up and coiled down so it would spring out the moment you opened the covers - like a miraculous Jack-in-the-box that turns out to be a big variety show, crowded with action and peopled with characters you will never forget." - from the jacket.
