With a pencil notation in the right margin on the recto (outside of image area), as well as some adhesive residue at the top right and left corners (also outside of the image area). On the verso are two small patches of very light and unobtrusive yellowing, neither of which present on the recto. In very good condition with minor uniform age tone becoming more moderate at the extreme sheet edges. With extensive notations by Jacques in pencil including a signature, date, title and inscription dated May 13th, 1930, Barbizon. With the Atelier Th. Rousseau / J.T. Hatcher Concessionnaire, Barbizon ink stamp on the verso. A touching scene of a young woman posing before Millet, modeling the female figure which would appear in his masterpiece painting L'Angelus. The painting depicts two peasants bowing in prayer over a basket of potatoes which they have just gleaned from a farm. Printed c 1930.

Johan Barthold Jongkind was a Dutch painter and printmaker who was born in the town Lattrop, near Rotterdam in The Netherlands in 1819. He was trained at the art academy in The Hague under Andreas Schelfhout, in 1846 he moved to Montparnasse in Paris, France where he studied under Eugène Isabey and François-Édouard Picot. In 1848 the Paris Salon accepted his work for its exhibition, and he received acclaim from critic Charles Baudelaire and later on from Émile Zola.
