After escaping from slavery in 1842, Harriet Jacobs (1813-1897) wrote this account of her life, with the editorial assistance of author and abolitionist Lydia Maria Child (1802-1880). For publication in 1861, both Jacobs' name and those of others were changed. One of the few accounts of slavery in the American South by a woman. In Fine Condition: clean and tight.

The early work of Paul Jacobsthal (1880-1957) was focused on Greek vases. In 1935 he was forced to leave Germany because of the rise of the Nazis; after he settled in England he expanded his interests to Celtic art. This offprint, about blinders on horses as depicted in Roman art, is an outlier from both of those areas. Very scarce. Rainis was the pseudonym of the author Janis Plieksans (1865-1929), a Latvian poet, playwright, and politician. When Latvia achieved independence in 1918, he returned from exile in Switzerland as a hero of Latvian culture. One of his poems (first line: "Viens pats tris gadus aru, aru, aru, aru") is here illustrated for children by Albert Kronenberg (1887-1958). Scarce.
