Description:
Of the People: A Concise History of the United States, Second Edition, not only tells the history of America--of its people and places, of its dealings and ideals--but it also unfolds the story of American democracy, carefully marking how this country's evolution has been anything but certain, from its complex beginnings to its modern challenges. This comprehensive survey focuses on the social and political lives of people--some famous, some ordinary--revealing the compelling story of America's democracy from an individual perspective, from across the landscapes of diverse communities, and ultimately from within the larger context of the world. The Concise Second Edition tells the same great story, but with fewer words and images. Maintaining the structure, the features, and maps of the comprehensive edition, this concise version has been thoughtfully condensed--paragraphs now contain trimmed sentences and a reduced number of examples--thus leaving the book's core content and compelling narrative…

Description:
Will James: "That Cowboy Who Drew Pictures"As a boy, Will James dreamed of becoming a cowboy. At age 15 he left his home near Montreal, Canada and, a few years later, was working for large and small cattle outfits in the American West. In addition, James attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco where he met artists Maynard Dixon and Harold Von Schmidt. James became widely known as "that cowboy who drew pictures."
Between 1920 and his death at age 50 in 1942, James is said to have written and illustrated more than 24 books and numerous magazine articles. His first novel, "Smoky The Cowhorse," was published in 1926. It received the prestigious Newbery Medal for children's literature and was adapted into three Hollywood films.
James' first-hand knowledge of wild and trained horses, coupled with his experience as a working cowboy, provided him with the insights and understanding of cowboy life unmatched by his peers, past or present.

Description:
New York: World Publishing Company 1940. First Edition. Octavo. 281p. illustrated by the author. Knowing horses means knowing both the good and the bad and Will James knew the difference and was not hesitant to note the bad. "Little Eagle" not only faithfully served a blind rancher but he saved him from a flood. "Bearcat" the bucking horse nobody could ride until one cowboy mastered him, the owner fired him and gave him the horse, explaining that it was humiliating that an outsider could break a horse his best cowboys could not. Many other stories with illustrations at the head of each chapter. Bound in blue-gray cloth lettered in red, spine lettering red, good copy with some browning to the gutter of joints, in pictorial dust jacket with chip to upper spine ends, some toning. A very good copy that any collector would cherish.
