Description:
[LGBTQ] J.C Priest. (Pen name for James Clark) Forbidden New York: Jack Woodford Press 1952. First edition mass-market paperback pulp. Measures 4.5 x 7 inches. 188 pages. Cover art bears classic "Good Girl Art," with a dark-haired woman leaning against a doorframe and gazing at another sitting on an unmade bed. Lesbian pulp fiction emerged in the mid-20th century and quickly rose to popularity, offering representation to a community of women isolated by conservative culture. Though they were considered lowbrow by critics, the ubiquity of these books marked a shift in public opinion. This particular volume centers its plot around a young widow as she navigates grief and falls for another woman. Bright colors. Highly collectible pulp in very good condition.

Description:
1938 appointment diary owned and used by Frances "Terry" Glassmoyer, who attended Ursinus College with J.D. Salinger in the fall of 1938. Terry and Jerry forged a lasting, strong bond in the one semester that Salinger attended Ursinus, and kept in frequent contact over the years until her death on 9 January 2010, only 17 days before Salinger's. In fact, Thierolf was the inspiration for Salinger's literary character Franny Glass in "Franny & Zooey." Terry fills in the identification portion of her diary as "Frances Thierolf / 42 Roslyn Ave. / Glenside, PA" along with her telephone number. She enters her height as 5'7" and weight as 126 lbs. The diary begins on New Year's Eve 1937 with plans to see "Stand-In" starring Humphrey Bogart. The first part of 1938 is filled with her classes, lunch and dinner dates with various suitors, sorority meetings, etc., typical of a 19 year old girl. The fall semester at Ursinus, when she would meet Salinger, begins in late September of 1938 and Salinger makes the first… Read More

All are 8" x 10" with 8 original silver gelatin vintage photographs in glossy black and white and 1 in matte color. The Passenger is Antonioni's film about a disillusioned Anglo-American journalist, David Locke (Jack Nicholson), who assumes the identity of a dead businessman while working on a documentary in Chad, unaware that he is impersonating an arms dealer with connections to the rebels in the current civil war. Covering themes of identity, alienation and the human desire to escape oneself, critics praised the film, with Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times calling it: "a masterpiece of visual beauty and rigorous artistry that is as tantalizing as it is hypnotic. It is a major achievement by one of the world's great filmmakers." Nicholson has described it as among his favorite films. Photos feature several… Read More

[Jamaica Abolition] Analysis of the Jamaica Acts to Carry into Effect the Act for Abolishing Slavery. London: Printed by John Stevens, 153 Fleet Street. 1835. First separate edition (Previously published in the Quarterly Review No. 58 in December, 1823). 3 pages. Measures 8" x 13". Publication examines the abolition of slavery in Jamaica and the potential consequences and impacts of the decision on Black workers. Focus is placed on the number of required hours to work, implications of the Imperial Act, and the continued rights of plantation owners, stating the outcome may be just "emancipating prisoners on the plantation to which he is attached." From the letter: "The principle of the Act for the abolition of slavery is, that the negro shall be in all respects a freeman, except the gratuitous service which he is bound, as a apprentice, to render for a time to his former owner...for forty-five hours in the week, and to certain civil disabilities for public office, which were considered incompatible… Read More

Henry James. The Ambassadors. Franklin Library First Edition, 1981. Hardcover, 418 pages. Numerous illustrations. Limited Edition of 1/4 leather, great ribbed decorated spine, and gilt edges on all pages. Accented gilt motifs on covers. Marbleized endsheets and with a silk ribbon page marker. This beautiful book is about 9 " by 6 1/4". In excellent condition. Henry James got the idea for The Ambassadors from his friend, novelist William Dean Howells, who while visiting his son in Paris was so impressed with European culture that wondered if life hadn't passed him by. The theme of liberation from a cramped, almost starved, emotional life into a more generous and gracious existence plays throughout The Ambassadors, yet it is noteworthy that James does not naïvely portray Paris as a faultless paradise for culturally stunted Americans. Strether learns about the reverse side of the European coin when he sees how desperately Marie fears losing Chad, after all she has done for him. The final lesson is to… Read More

Description:
Addams, Jane. Handbill. 1911. "Jane Addams Wants to Vote." Eminent American social worker Jane Addams outlines an argument for women's suffrage in this extract from an article in Ladies' Home Journal in 1910. Jane Addams, who is known for promoting the idea that it is each person's responsibility to help the community at large, writes that women need the right to vote to ensure "the members of her own household that they may be properly fed and clothed and surrounded by hygienic conditions." At the time that this description is being written, no copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. Addams argues that city women are "utterly dependent upon the city administrations for the conditions which render decent living possible." Without these public services, tenement bathrooms may have unsanitary plumbing and stairways may not be fireproof, markets may sell meat that has not been inspected, and garbage may pile up on the street. Original 19th Century Hand colored photograph of the Festival of Lanterns at Yokohama, Japan. The photograph measures 8"x10" and is matted to 10-1/2"x13". Lower right hand corner label reads "A 264 Festival Lanterns at Bentendori, Yokohama." Festival lanterns cheer up the business district of Bentendori 2-chome and 3-chome in Yokohama. During the Meiji Period, this was Yokohama's premier shopping street. Foreign visitors came here to buy porcelain, curios, ivory, silk and photographs. The photographer of this very image, Kimbei Kusakabe, actually had a studio on this street between 1881 and 1889. Unfortunately, the exotic amalgamation of Japan and the Western world that existed on Bentendori was forever destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. Photographs such as this are all that is left of a bygone era. In very good condition.

Japanese American WWII Combat Regiment Archive of the 1943 Album of the 442nd Combat Team and three original photos, including an original 2.75" x 3.75" photo of Haruo Ishida, a Japanese American soldier from the 442nd from Seattle, WA, who was KIA in 1945. The Album was printed by Albert Love Enterprises of Atlanta, GA, during Word War II in 1943. The album is a military yearbook that includes a history of the 442nd, and many captioned photos of the unit at Camp Shelby, MS, doing drills, arms testing, maintenance work, and group shots of the unit and its various subdivisions. Many of the 442nd hailed from Hawaii and the rest were assembled from the internment camps across the USA. Haruo Ishida, is pictured in a separate original photo. This photo, dated Feb. 25, 1944, shows Ishida and five white soldiers with inscriptions on verso with their names and places of origin. He is described as "Haru Ishida" from Chicago, though our research suggests he grew up in Seattle as the son of immigrants. Ishida… Read More
