Description:
London: Alex. Hogg, 1795. Leather bound. Very good. Six volumes (complete), octavo size, 2366 total pp. "The Newgate Calendar", named after the Newgate Prison in London, began as a monthly bulletin of executions published by the "Keeper" of Newgate Prison in London. It soon became popular as a form of morality entertainment of the day, in many families ranking alongside of the Bible and "The Pilgrim's Progress" (n.b., info per Wiki). Although taken from actual events, the Calendar is known for presenting embellished accounts of crimes, with much editorialising incorporated into the stories. This six-volume set (five volumes plus the Supplement) comprises the lives and exploits of criminals from 1700 to 1795, and is replete with numerous copper plate engravings depicting the crimes in the text. The first volume has a pictorial title page with an engraved frontispiece dated 1794 and a pictorial title page with the title as "The New & Complete Newgate Calendar" (undated); volumes two through four show… Read more

San Francisco: The Book Club of California, printed and decorated with woodcuts by Mallette Dean, 1956. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good +. Dean, Mallette. One of 350 copies, quarto size, 58 pp., with prospectus. The only published prose work by Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962), with a preface by Professor B. H. Lehman, who had also introduced the Book Club of California's earlier, 1928 work of Jeffers, entitled simply "Poems", this volume is the transcript of a lecture Jeffers gave at the Library of Congress in 1941; it was one of the few times Jeffers could be persuaded to read and talk about his poetry, and the lecture demonstrates the force and depth behind one of California's finest poets.Mallette Dean (1907-1975), in addition to printing the book, illustrates the book with his stunning woodcuts; a printer and muralist, Dean was one of twenty-six artists commissioned to paint murals in San Francisco's Coit Tower, and he illustrated books for the Grabhorn Press for fifteen years. Description:
New York: Boni & Liveright, 1927. Hardcover. Good +/good. Fifth printing, octavo size, 253 pp., inscribed by Robinson Jeffers. American poet John Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) was a prolific writer of the twentieth century; his bleak and uncompromising style of poetry was formed through his philosophy of "inhumanism", which focused on a rejection of emotion and man, in favour of nature and other creatures in the universe. This volume of his work features the long poem "Roan Stallion", which was conceived upon Jeffers finding an old cabin that had been abandoned for many years after its owner was killed by a stallion. Its powerful narrative is filled with a supernatural wildness, and when it was first published it was met with both acclaim and criticism for its controversial portrayal of the relationship between the woman and the stallion, and the stallion's symbolic persona as God. While a fifth printing, this particular volume special as it is inscribed by Jeffers on the front free endpaper… Read more

New York: Horace Liveright, 1928. First and Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. First printing, no. 65 of 375 copies, octavo size, 160 pp., signed by Robinson Jeffers, with glassine and slipcase. American poet Robinson Jeffers (1887-1962) was a prolific writer of the twentieth century; his bleak and uncompromising style of poetry was formed through his philosophy of "inhumanism", which focused on a rejection of emotion and man, in favour of nature and other creatures in the universe. This the first printed appearance of the poem "Cawdor", which Jeffers described thus: "The events of the principal poem in this book...may be thought of as being already ancient history on this future-ridden coast; they end under the comet of 1910. I think of 'Cawdor' as making a third with 'Tamar' and 'The Woman at Point Sur'; but as if in 'Tamar' human affairs had been seen looking westward, against the ocean; in 'Point Sur' looking upward, minimized to ridicule against the stars; in 'Cawdor' looking… Read more

San Francisco: H.S. Crocker Co. and Cunningham, Curtiss & Welch (printed by Taylor, Nash & Taylor), 1914. First Edition. Softcover. Very good. Quarto size, [94] pp., inscribed by the author, Willis Linn Jepson. Willis Linn Jepson (1867-1946) is known as California's most distinguished early botanist, being identified with the University of California, Berkeley, for most of his long career as an instructor in Botany. He was 25 years old in 1892, when he, John Muir and Warren Olney, at an attorney's office in San Francisco, formed the Sierra Club. This volume is Part IV only (pp. 369 to 464 and figures 66-91) of "A Flora of California", and is inscribed on the front wrap "To Miss Rowena Beans / With the compliments of / the author". Seattle: Dogwood Press, 1932. Wraps. Near fine. Octavo size, 12 pp. John Julius Johnck was one of the partners of the highly regarded San Francisco publishing house of Johnck & [Harold] Seeger, who also studied with Daniel Berkeley Updike and William Addison Dwiggins at Harvard; this small pamphlet, printed by the Dogwood Press, is the result of Frank McCaffrey hearing Johnck read a paper at the 1931 Craftsmen's Conference in Seattle. The Dogwood Press published its first work, "The Psychology of Printing Types", in 1934 and continued printing at least through 1960. Although information about the Press proves elusive, as recently as 2014 the Heavenly Monkey press mentioned the Dogwood Press in a blog entry; McCaffrey appears to have printed small, elegant books which were often about typography or Seattle area history.___DESCRIPTION: Green paper wraps, gilt lettering and decoration on the front wrap, fore-edge uncut, title page with decorative border in black, red initial capital letter; octavo… Read more

Description:
Potsdam: Gustav Keipenheuer, 1920. Limited Edition. Vellum. Near fine. No. 164 of 200 copies bound in full vellum, quarto size, 383 pp., entirely in German. John-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) remains a cornerstone today of modern philosophical thought; his work greatly influenced the Enlightenment and "the development of modern political, economic and educational thought." This work, structured as a novel using the vehicle of letters between the protagonist, ostensibly explores the themes of temptation, sin, betrayal and redemption. However, "a philosophical theory about authenticity permeates through it, as he [Rousseau] explores autonomy and authenticity as moral values." Immediately popular upon publication in 1761, the publisher was unable to keep up with demand, resulting in copies being rented by the day "and even by the hour." This publication, in German, is one of the 200 copies bound in full vellum with extensive gilt trim and lettering by Otto Dorfner and his Fachschule für… Read more

New York: Stewart, Tabori & Chang [1990]. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Near Fine. Johnston, Ollie and Thomas, Frank. Quarto size, 208 pp., signed by Ollie Johnston, Frank Thomas, Marc Davis, and Maurice Noble. Both the book and the companion flip book are signed by animators Ollie Johnston, Frank Thomas, Marc Davis, and Maurice Noble. Johnston, Thomas, and Davis were three of Walt Disneys' "Nine Old Men", and Marc Davis developed and animated the characters of Bambi and Thumper. Maurice Noble was with Disney Studios for the early part of his career and worked on the development of the Bambi film. Who amongst us has not either read the book by Felix Salten, published in the 1920s, or seen the film done in 1942? As the authors wrote, "From the start, 'Bambi' was a very different picture. It had a fantasy and reality all its own, separate from Walt Disney's other films. This was no imaginary forest that one could enter and leave at will. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston [Book published 1971]. Uncorrected Proof. Soft cover. Very Good. Quarto size, 71 pp. Erica Jong (born 1942) is perhaps best known for her first novel, "Fear of Flying", which was published in 1973 and was highly controversial for its attitudes towards female sexuality. However, Ms. Jong is also a published author of non-fiction and poetry. This book was her first book of poetry, published in 1971, although several of the books were previously published in various periodicals; it opens with the phrase "Poetry, the creative act, the archtypal sexual act. Sexuality is poetry" (Norman O. Brown). This volume is an uncorrected proof of the book (with page numbers hand-written in) with the preliminary page stating "These UNREVISED UNCORRECTED PROOFS of a book which will be published some months from now, are for the use of staff members of CRANE DUPLICATING SERVICE, INC. New York: Leslie-Judge Company, 1927. 4th Printing. Hardcover. Very good +. Twenty-fourmo size, 63 pp. Norman Hume Anthony, cartoonist and illustrator, editor of Judge Magazine and, later, Life Magazine, authored this bar book during Prohibition in America. A predecessor of the 1930 "Savoy" cocktail book, which takes many recipes from "Here's How!", this book contains many popular cocktail recipes from the early twentieth century, accompanied by Anthony's witticisms in the form of suggested "toasts" to go with each drink, printed at the bottom of each page. This delightful volume shows the liveliness during the Prohibition era that pervaded the 1920s despite the laws in place (the Prohibition law would not be repealed until five years after this book was published). This book is the fourth printing of the first edition, printed in March 1927, two months after the first impression. ___DESCRIPTION: Full light blue paper with gilt lettering on the front board, blue endpapers, title page in orange and… Read more
