Description:
New York: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc, 1944. First printing. Original cloth over boards. Octavo. [vi], 244 pages. Good in a good dust jacket. Bound in red cloth over boards. Some minor extremity rubs, a bit of water tiding to top edge of some leaves and boards. Textblock mildly age toned. Jacket has some edge chips, rubs along joint and fore edge folds, and some expert archival tissue repairs to old separations along folds.. Charles Jackson's famous first novel of a talented but alcoholic writer and a five-day drinking binge. There are many parallels to Jackson's own life, and he later would become a spokesman for AA.

Billy Wilder directed a 1945 film adaptation of the book, which won four of the seven Oscars for which it was nominated.

The book became a bestseller with numerous printings, but first printings are tough to find--especially in the original dust jacket.

Description:
Boston: Houghton, Osgood and Company, 1878. First edition. Original cloth over boards. Eighteenmo. 219 pages. Near fine, with a few light extremity rubs. Spine a bit cocked. Green cloth over boards stamped in gilt and blind, tan endpapers, all textblock edges red.. Henry James's first novel, originally published serially in the Atlantic Monthly in 1871, and here for the first time in book form.

The simple and melodramatic plot caused James to essentially disown this work, instead referring to the far more substantial "Roderick Hudson" as his first novel as his career took off.

This is one of the 1,000 copies in the first printing of May 29, 1878, in bright green cloth (Edel, binding "a").

Ref. EDEL and LAWRENCE, A6.

Description:
Baltimore: Printed by W. M. Innes, 1863. Later card covers. Octavo. 48 pages. Bound in later moire-patterned card covers with type-script label on front cover. Light tanning to pamphlet, with an old pencil note below author's name and a faint water-tide mark at inner margin, and on title page. Very good to near fine overall.. Interesting and uncommon pamphlet published in Baltimore during the Civil War which is highly critical of Abraham Lincoln, New England, and Abolitionists. The author sees disunion and the Civil War as resulting from self-righteous New Englanders too aggressively pushing their agenda on the South. He claims that while Lincoln's words claimed to want the Union preserved, his policies forced the rift with the South.

Ref. SABIN 36316.

[London]: G. W. Bacon & Co., Ltd, 1914. Single sheet. 22" x 30". Folds into paper covers. Near fine. Map has creases from being folded into 16ths. There are a few tiny separations at fold intersections but no loss.. A rare seriocomic pictorial map of Europe at the outbreak of World War I. Likely designed in September 1914, after the German advance on Paris had been halted with the aid of the British at the battles of Mons and the Marne. The comedic depiction of the protagonist nations as dogs reflects the optimism of the British at this early stage of the conflict. The English bulldog, flanked by the French poodle, delivers a nasty bite to the nose of the pickelhaube-wearing German dachshund.

This almost whimsical view of the war was of course short-lived. Soon Johnson, Riddle & Co. would be designing recruitment posters to attract volunteers into a war effort that had utterly lost the sense of playful optimism depicted here.

A… Read More

Leather spine and fore corners with marbled paper sides, five raised bands. Spine titled and ornamented in gilt, both boards with gilt rules, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. A few tiny rubs to binding, else fine.. Black and white frontispiece photo. This copy extra-illustrated. The period covered in this orderly book of the Maryland Loyalists begins with the evacuation of Philadelphia, covers the march across the Jerseys, and the foraging tour and cantonment on Long Island. It fills an important gap in the historical record for the period herein after July 5th, 1778. The book was kept by Caleb Jones, once sheriff of Somerset County but arrested by the Council of Safety in 1776. After his release on bonds of £200 he made his to Philadelphia with the British Army, where he enlisted in the Maryland Loyalists. <br… Read More

[Mexico City], 1861. Manuscript. 10.50" x 8.25. Very Good. Single page letter by Mexican revolutionary and her first constitutionally elected President. Written on laid paper with horizontal fold lines. Loss of lower left corner of sheet not affecting any content. Lightly pencilled translation attempts by a prior owner above several words.. The Juarez government had recaptured Mexico City on January 1, 1861, and he was elected President in the month following this letter. His declaration of a 2-year suspension of interest payments on international debts related to the Mexican Revolution led to an invasion by the French in 1862. The Juarez government's initial defeat of this force at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 is commemorated annually as Cinco de Mayo. The content of this letter has not been fully translated, but discusses emigration into Mexico. The paper is embossed in upper left corner "Secretaria Particular del Presidente de la Republica" (Private Secretary of the… Read More
