Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1888. H.M.R.C. Edition. Octavo. x, 514, [4, ads] pp. Publisher's brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. Aside from a bit of old soiling to the upper spine, a very clean and handsome copy. Jackson, author, of the classic Ramona, was an advocate for Native American rights and this was her bid to help. "Jackson wrote A Century of Dishonor in an attempt to change government ideas/policy toward Native Americans at a time when effects of the 1871 Indian Appropriations Act (making the entire Native American population wards of the nation) had begun to draw the attention of the public. Jackson attended a meeting in Boston in 1879 at which Standing Bear, a Ponca, told how the federal government forcibly removed his tribe from its ancestral homeland in the wake of the creation of the Great Sioux Reservation. After meeting Standing Bear, she conducted research at the Astor Library in New York and was shocked by the story of government mistreatment that she found" (Wiki)

Publisher's blue cloth with gilt spine and cover lettering, front cover with on onlaid color illustration riding his horse at full gallop. Light wear to head of soine but a very clean and good copy. A very intimate (he hadn't wanted his notebook printed) journal. Indeed at times the reader cannot even determine where he is without looking at the running headers. It appears that this was a caravaning family trio, with one Packard following the other. They must have been quite well off as each car had its own chauffeur. The commenced their great road trio in Colorado, then off to Arizona. The largest part of the text concerns his travels in California: San Bernardino, Riverside, Culver City (so we know he wasn't a pastor; Culver City being the sin capitol of LA at the time), Pasadena, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara. In August he… Read More

Small octavo (203 x 137 mm.). ix, [2], 303, [1] pp. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt spine and cover lettering, top edge gilt, remainder uncut. A lovely copy. "Beginning in 1891, William James gave frequent lectures to teachers in which he explained the psychology he had developed in his "Principles of Psychology" and offered suggestions on applying the science of psychology to the art of education. Similarly, beginning in 1895, James delivered a series of lectures to college students -- generally at schools for women -- on education and its purposes. In 1899, James gathered both sets of lectures together and published them as "Talks to Teachers on Psychology and to Students on Some of Life's Ideals." The book was read widely and became financially successful for James." (R. Friedman). This copy's margins are considerably larger than other copies we have seen.
