L, 321 pp, with portraits, facsimiles, and a map, in original two-tone full-leather binding. Corners and bottom edges scuffed, pages toned, subtle ex-library indications, else clean and sound. The first 50 pages are an essay by J. Sanchez Garza, the remainder prints the text of a manuscript titled "Resena y diario de la Campana de Texas, por Jose Enrique de la Pena. Matamoros, Tamps. Septiembre 15 de 1836." José Enrique de la Peña 9c. 1807-1841) was a lieutenant colonel in the Mexican navy and participant in the battle of the Alamo. One corner bumped; contents clean and sound. . From the Abstract: "The first section focuses on the terminology used in this report, project procedures and the historical background of the Navajo occupation in the De Chelly area. The next part encompasses the excavated sites and ancillary studies conducted in conjunction with the project" followed by synthesis of data and conclusions.

Two text volumes, no atlas. 8vo, pp 503, 442, xcviii (including Astronomical and Meterological Record and Vocabularies of Indian Languages), in contemporary full calf bindings with red and black spine labels. Both volumes show some old pale dampstaining, but still a very good, clean set overall. This important government-sponsored expedition, led by Major Stephen Harriman Long of the U.S. Army Topographical Engineers, was tasked with conducting a military and scientific reconnaissance of the central plains for the first time. The part included men with training in geology, botany, zoology, and ethnology, as well as a naturalist, an artist, and a topographer. Some chipping and tiny tears to wrappers;contents clean. James first saw Captain, a performing horse owned by W.A. Sigsbee of Chicago, at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Amazed by the horse's apparent ability to count, add, and subtract; play "Nearer My God to Thee" on the chimes; and perform a variety of tricks in response to verbal commands, James resolved to learn more about the horse and his trainer. Here their story is told in full from Captain's point of view ("There are some people who think I don't like to give performances. I don't know why, except that I do get tired a little once in a while, and sometimes my master wants me to be quiet and good when I feel frisky and frolicsome and want to kick up my heels. Souvenir view book with two pages of text in Japanese, folding map, and 34 half-tone photographic plates captioned in Japanese and English. Located in the upper and middle reaches of the Yamaguni River in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, the Yabakei Valley is considered one of Japan's most beautiful scenic areas. Among the views included here are Sugi Village from Blue Grotto, Peak of Kyoshu, Hachioji Rock, Rakanji Temple, Goryu Falls, Nembutsu Bridge, and other bridges, waterfalls, and geologic formations.
