Boards a bit rubbed, with a little fading to gilt; cloth lightly chipped at spine tips and corners; bookplate on front paste-down. Internally nice and clean.

Contemporary Austrian or German half calf, slight variation to decoration of spine, and varying marbled boards, spines gilt panelled, tan calf lettering-pieces; 4to (237 and 234 x 182 mm), 2 volumes; pages untrimmed and almost entirely unopened, with 44 hand-colored engraved plates (5 folding), of plants, plant parts, lichen, one of butterflies and scarabs, by Jakob Adams, probably after the drawings of the various contributors, woodcut title vignettes, head- and tail-pieces. Boards lightly rubbed; corners gently bumped; some light worming at spine tips of Volume II. Textblocks a little foxed; folding plate 20 in Volume I with short marinal tear at fold. An excellent set. White cloth, lettering stamped in black on spine; dust jacket; 4to; pp. 255, illustrated throughout in b/w and full-color. Spine tips a little tanned, otherwise book is fine, in faintly scratched dust jacket. Published on the occasion of an exhibition organized by Walker Art Center and shown internationally, and featuring essays by numerous contributors, a chronology, biographies, bibliography, and index.

London: Abelard-Schuman, 1972. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good+. Cloth; illustrated dust jacket. With an etching especially created for this volume, and signed by the artist. Book is fine, in VG+ dust jacket with some light wrinkling and tanning along spine and edges.

Maestricht: A. A. M. Stols, 1928. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. Marbled paper over boards, backed in gilt-stamped parchment, original backstrip and front cover preserved at rear. Printed in red and black, and with full-page tissue-guarded illustrations. Number 9 from a limited edition of 10 copies on "Imsperial du Japon" paper, and with an two extra suites of the woodcuts. Some light dust-soiling along spine, otherwise fine. Plates are lovely.

Les Livres Celebres, Editions Lapina, 1924. Paperback. Near Fine. Heavy cardstock wraps in illustrated dust jacket, wrapped in glassine; woodcut illustrations throughout, with details printed in red and beige. Number 27 from a limited edition of 35 copies on "Japon Imperial" paper; and with an additional suite of the woodcut illustrations, loose, suitable for display, in a cardstock portfolio, wrapped in glassine. The whole housed in a good, sturdy folder (decorative paper over boards), likely missing a slipcase. Book is very gently bumped at tail of spine, with coordinating chips (tiny) in the glassine -- very near fine. Suite of plates -- also near fine, with a closed tear along bottom edge of the cardstock portfolio (plates themselves are fine). Folder is a little scuffed and worn, but it's done a remarkable job of protecting this lavish limited edition. Nice.

American, early 1900s. Hardcover. Very Good+. A pretty standard "Composition Book," from Williams, Brown & Earle, Inc., Scientific Instruments, of Philadelphia. Marbled paper over boards (20 cm x. 25.5 cm), cloth backstrip, handwritten paper label on upper board; approx. 200 lined pages, about 2/3 of which are full of handwritten notes and illustrations; nice card slipped into a sleeve on the inside front board, from Bausch & Lomb Optical Company, illustrating the mechanical features of the microscope of one side side, and the path of light rays on the other. Begins with 34 exceptionally detailed (framed in a circle, as though viewed through a microscope) drawings of different views of teeth and gums, in varying states of health or decay, including: Tooth Development 70-75th Intra Uterine Life, Nasmyth's Membrane, Longitudinal Section of Tooth Crown Showing Histological Features of Enamel, Hypoplasia of Enamel, Abnormal Enamel, and more. Text in Spanish, translated from the French. 18th-century Spanish vellum, ms. title to spine “Jacobo 2o”; (lacking ties but internally clean and bright). Spanish imprint of the biography of James II of England, published during the last of the Jacobite uprisings. Forced out of power in the Glorious Revolution of 1688, and defeated in the subsequent battle of the Boyne by William of Orange, the short reign of James II has an importance that reaches far beyond his three years in power. He died in 1701 in exile at the Palace of St. Germain in France and remains to be one of the most complex and intriguing persons of history. An ardent Roman Catholic, his efforts to return England to the Catholic faith continue to resonate to this day in Northern Ireland.
