Description:
Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1893. First Edition. 309pp; green cloth, Sarah Wyman Whitman trade binding design with stylized flowering tree front panel, title in gilt on elongated trunk, the tree's roots enclosing the author's name. A tiny bit of rubbing to bottom of spine, endpapers sunned at edges, early owner's pencil signature on ffep, else a very good + copy. This is a selection of nine short stories about Jewett's native Maine. Published just three years before her masterpiece, THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS, these stories show Jewett as a confident and mature writer. Long seen as a minor voice of the local color school, she is now regarded as an American master whose writing influenced Kate Chopin, Willa Cather and others well into the 20th century. BAL 10902. Allen and Gullans, p. 103.

With the addition of an eight-page Preface for this edition by the author, Sarah Orne Jewett. 8vo; [i-x] [1]306pp.;305pp; original drab paper over boards with smooth white cloth spine and tips; printed buff paper label at spine; covers slightly soiled, edges a trifle rubbed, very good+. Illustrated by Marcia and Charles Woodbury with fifty-two half-tone engravings that are printed and chine colled to text pages. This handsome edition of the writer's first book reflects Sarah Orne Jewett's wide popularity among her contemporaries. A handsome edition of the author's first book. When DEEPHAVEN appeared in 1877, critics and readers alike recognized a new voice in the value of using local speech and realistic detail to reflect uniquely American character within a loosely-woven plot structure. Sarah Orne Jewett read and absorbed Stowe's work and in DEEPHAVEN, and the books to follow… Read More

London: Eagle Gallery, 2002. One of 12 copies, all on BKK Rives and Tosa Shoji paper, each signed and numbered by the artist. Page size: 11-7/8 inches x 7-3/8 inche; 78pp. All with 9 dry points by Jane Joseph, editioned by Marie Walker and 9 poems by Mel Gooding printed letterpress by Graham Bignell at New North Press on Tosa Shoji, set in Legacy Sans. Bound by Tracey Rowledge: handmade olive green Japanese paper over paper boards with title printed in silver on front cover, housed in publisher's white slipcase, fine. The 9 dry points perfectly complement Gooding's verse. Joseph's images of common plants such as pussy willow, ragwort, bluebells, and the like are anything but prosaic. Rather she infuses her images with the dignity of all living things and finds beauty in the simple lines. Gooding's verse does the same - "Close garden cousin of wild 'nonscriptus' / 'washes' paler (but not less beautiful)..." - Garden Bluebell. For anyone who loves flowers and gardening, this book will have particular… Read More

Bound after design by LOUIS JOU, executed by Mercier fils: hand-painted vellum binding the title in red broken by an elaborate intertwining vine in heavy gold gilt, a single vine border repeated at top and bottom of front cover, author and title in red on spine separated with gilt leaves, gilt vine rondel on back panel. Top edge gilt, original wrappers bound in, fine. Louis Jou (1882-1968), although born in Spain, spent most of his life in Paris creating beautiful books. Calling himself "artisan" not "maitre" Jou was nonetheless a master craftsman and designer of books. His type designs, woodcuts, and printing put him in the front ranks of great printers of the twentieth century. He designed few bindings to accompany his books, but those that do exist attest to his art there as well as on the interior of the book. SONNETS POUR HELENE is printed in red… Read More
