Description:
Engraved, hand colored, decorative cartouche, ample margins, 43.7 x 30 cm (17 1/2" x 12"). Minor aging and slight browning; otherwise very good, bright and with a strong impression. Janivier was a French geographer that was active in the second half of the 18th century. According to Norwich and Tooley, Janivier produced a series of maps in 1760, and collaborated in an Atlas Moderne in 1762 and 1771.The present map is number 28 from that atlas. This rather handsome engraved map, which has full color, appears to present the cartographic knowledge of Africa in the mid 18th century. The map is fairly accurate, and shows the only settlements in southern Africa, and also features a few Hottentot tribes. The cartouche, which is in the lower left part of the map, shows a few tress, a leopard stalking, and a crocodile near the bottom. Norwich 104. Tooley p. 59.

Description:
Double page engraved map (29" x 21"), hand colored in outline, decorative cartouche. Some chips and tears in margins, but margins are wide, a little creasing around the centerfold, minor aging; otherwise about very good, bright and with a strong impression. Janvier was a French geographer that was active in the second half of the 18th century. According to Norwich and Tooley, Janvier produced a series of maps in 1760, and collaborated in an Atlas Moderne in 1762 and 1771.The present map is number 28 from that atlas. This rather handsome engraved map, which has full color, appears to present the cartographic knowledge of Africa in the mid 18th century. The present map was originally published in 1762, in a slightly smaller version. However, this edition appears to have has greater detail, and this is especially true in the interior and southern portion of the continent. There is a decorative cartouche in the upper left corner that features a lion coming out of the jungle. Norwich 104. Tooley p. 59.

Early American edition of Thomas Jefferson's most important book published during his lifetime and considered one of America's first permanent literary and intellectual landmarks. Description:
Pamphlet, removed, dbd, 8vo, 7 pp. Edges are chipped, and there is a short edge tear to title, pages partially detached, and some foxing and toning. A very interesting document in which Thomas Jefferson forwards a letter by Governor William C.C. Claiborne to the House and the Senate concerning an Indian problem. Apparently a tribe of Choctaws had refused compensation for the murder of an Indian probably because they wanted a land issue settled. It would seem that the generous amount of $60 to the wife and children of the murder Indian wasn't enough. These Indians had been living among the whites for over forty years and supported themselves with hunting, fishing and cotton picking in that area. As the white community grew they didn't seem to want the Indians around anymore. Claiborne felt the solution was to ask Congress for a parcel of land (about 2000-3000 acres) that could be put aside for the tribe. Jefferson favored this approach, and added in his forwarding letter that it would be a good thing… Read More

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, dbd, 7 pp. A few small chips where pamphlet was removed, and normal aging and toning.Report contains summary information on various treaties between the United States and a few Indian tribes. Dearborn, the Secretary of War, reports that the U.S. has obtained considerable tracts of land from treaties with the Creek and the Choctaw Nations. He adds that the government could probably get more land from these people on reasonable terms. He also reports that boundaries between the State of North Carolina and the Cherokees have been worked out, however, despite some progress establishing a boundary between white people and Indians on the Kasskaskia settlements on the Mississippi, a more formal treaty would be needed. He also indicated a need to add four additional Indian trading houses.

Boxing bill (poster) advertisement for Joe Louis fight films, 9"x 12," one sheet. Some aging and browning, a few chips at the edges; otherwise very good. This advertisement for a Joe Louis fight movie promises "all the great Joe Louis Fights in one picture." Louis is pictured in in two photos, one a promotional pose with Jim Braddock, and a second picture of Louis outside the ring as the ref counts out one of his opponents. This film was to be shown at the Dixie Theatre, and the fights were to include his battles with Baer, Carnera, Levinsky, Schmeling and Braddock. While the small poster is not dated, it is probably before the second Schmeling fight, which he won by first round knockout, since there is no reference to it.

New York: A.J. Johnson, 1867. Unbound, colored engraved map, decorative boarder, 16" x13". Some toning and aging, a couple of chips at the edge of a very ample margin; otherwise fairly bright and clean and in very nice condition. Alvin Jewett Johnson (1827-1884) appears to have entered the map publishing business in 1860. It appears that he obtained J.H. Colton's map copyrights, and published the first installment of the Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas In that year. Many of the maps Johnson would use would bear the J.H. Colton copyright for many years. Johnson's Atlas would run from 1860 to 1885. While Johnson would use somewhat similar boarder designs, map coloring would appear a little heavier than the earlier Colton maps. This map of Asia is from the 1867 edition of Johnson's Illustrated Family Atlas, and has nice coloring and good detail. The 19th century political geography makes this map interesting from that standpoint. May require extra postage.Ristow 325-326
