Hutchinson, London, 1966 191 printed pages. Map endpapers. Loosely inserted is a signed letter on headed notepaper from Norwich (1929-2018) to Jonathan Haw. 22.5 x 28.5 cm. Original green cloth. Spine slightly faded and stained. Musty smell. Complete with photographic dust jacket (edges slightly torn with small loss at the top edge on the back panel). Jonathan Haw was a rower at Keble College, Oxford, who established the New York branch of the legal firm Slaughter & May and who served as Master of the Armourer & Brasier's Company in 2008 and 2013. The 2002 letter gives details of bookshops that stocked second-hand copies of this book, and says that it never ran to a second edition, expressing gratification that people were still interested in reading it. It was Norwich's first published book, based on his second visit to Mount Athos with a Greek friend Costa, who took photos, and Sacheverell Sitwell's son Reresby, (who bought a rucksack stuffed with luxury food items from Fortnum…

Description:
160 and 142 printed pages. 60 x 98mm. Original glossy white paper wrappers printed in green ink (somewhat worn, edges slightly chipped, spine with vertical cracks and faded titling) the publisher's list of Diamond Classics on the back wrapper lists these two titles as individual volumes- not a double volume. Jones' Diamond Classics. Welsh lists a copy of Rasselas, a University edition from 1825 for both titles and a later printing of 1830 (Welsh, 4069, 2047 & 2048). This printed wrappers bound double volume, produced a further five years after the individual publications, is a rare publishing/academic curiosity- a publisher using up leftover stock, perhaps, that did not achieve popularity, I assume, possibly due to its innate fragility. It was not entirely uncommon to publish a 'marriage' of two different and incompatible authors/novels in that era. Chiswick Press by C. Whitingham : Sold by R. Jennings, Poultry, London, published these same two novels together in 1818. Later in 1847, William Tegg and…
