Raised spine bands with gilt stamped lettering. Top edge is gilded. Marbled end leaves. Last few leaves with slight wave, appearing to have been pulled during binding. Volume is otherwise Fine.

All edges of text are gilded. Silk moire end leaves and book mark. There is a very small and slight scuff on the gilded bottom edge. Volume is otherwise Fine.

Top and bottom boards present, though show rubbing on leather over corners and along spine. Hinges are loosened. Title page with four inch closed tear along bound edge. Scattered foxing and a bit of light wear. Text block remains tight and is otherwise intact. This would make a good binding copy of this scarce first printing.

Housed in a lovely clam shell case with leather over spine and gilt lettering on spine and top cover. Light wear at corners. Covers are lightly rubbed which can be seen on the title. End leaves with surface tears where it appears tape was removed. Otherwise a tight and clean copy. Slipcase is a little faded over spine and shows very light wear at corners.

Boston: Wells & Lilly, 1830. First U. S. Edition . Cloth - Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo. Three volumes. All three volumes with the 1835 book plate of Amelia Townsend (sp?) on front paste down. The mid 20th century book plate of Holcomb Genung is affixed to the front free end leaf of the first volume. Paper spine labels with some chips, but remaining good. Joints and hinges of Vol. I are cracked and top cover is loosened though still attached. There is also a tear in the front free end page where book plate has been pulled. Otherwise, volumes show light wear consistent with age, though are generally intact and remaining tight.

Complete in five volumes published form 1855 to 1859. Each volume is fully bound in tan Moroccan leather with gilt lettering and decoration on spine, and along the edges both inside and out. Raised spine bands create six compartments. All edges of text are gilded. Marbled end leaves. Proceeding the table of contents, there is a page listing the added illustrations in each volume, with a total number of added plates being 127. Several of the added illustrations show offsetting onto adjacent pages, and there are two small blue ink stains on the frontis portrait of George Washington in Vol. I. Other slight wear is seen. Each volume is housed in a slipcase that has been functional, though not particularly attractive.
