Description:
London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. First edition. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, in the pictorial dustjacket. 254 pp. A very handsome and clean copy in a complete and only very lightly mellowed dustjacket. FIRST EDITION. Fleming’s books have had a staying power that few thriller-writers can match, perhaps because Bond is such an intriguing and morally ambiguous hero. Some admire him as a suave, supremely competent man of action who always gets the girl; others decry him a superficial playboy with a streak of sadism. According to Fleming, “Bond is not a hero, nor is he depicted as being very likeable or admirable. He is a Secret Service agent. He’s not a bad man, but he is ruthless and self-indulgent. He enjoys the fight--he also enjoys the prizes. In fiction, people used to have blood in their veins. Nowadays they have pond water.” The ninth James Bond thriller finds the high-living superspy guzzling carrot juice in a recovery clinic… Read More

Description:
[Chiselhurst], [1872]. The photograph would have been taken at the same time as the photograph called "the last photograph of Napoleon III" taken while in exile in Chiselhurst, England. 6.5 by 4.25 inches, original Carte de Visite mounted photograph. A well preserved image that shows very handsomely. There is a bit of wear at the edges of the mounting board. AN ORIGINAL CARTE DE VISITE PHOTOGRAPH OF CHARLES-LOUIS BONAPARTE, EMPEROR NAPOLEON III. This is a photograph of him taken while living in exile in England about six months prior to his death. It is likely that it was taken during the same sitting as the "last photograph" as he is wearing the same clothing with accouterments as in that well known photograph. The nephew and heir of Napoleon Bonaparte, Napoleon III was the Emperor of the French from 1852 to 1870 and, as Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, the President of France from 1848 to 1852. He was the only president of the French Second Republic and the founder of the Second French… Read More

Description:
Frankfurt: Deutsche Lehrmittel-Anstalt,, circa 1915. A beautifully printed rotating disk of the stars, white on a black field. Approximately 250mm in diameter, within a heavily embossed and gilt lettered and decorated framework of stiff black paper boards, on the rear is a pastedown of printed information, all in German. Very fine, very well preserved and still completely functional, the gilt with a little wear in places, a little bumping. A BEAUTIFUL ANTIQUE PLANISPHERE, or star-map designed to illustrate the movement of the stars. It provides the position of the stars in the sky for each hour of the year. In the late 19th century these started to become more popular with amateur astronomers, astrologists and in pedagogical gatherings. This Planisphere consists of a base plate showing the starry sky, the upper plate has a scale division in months, days and hours.

Paris: A. and W. Galignani, 1828. 4 volumes. First edition published in France. The book was published in England in the same year. Two large folding maps. 8vo, contemporary dark-blue half calf over marbled boards, the spines with red and black morocco lettering labels gilt, raised bands gilt ruled. xvi,472; viii, 517; viii, 434; vii, 513 pp. A handsome set with light aging or light rubbing at the tips, clean and very well preserved lettering labels refurbished at some time. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION, Paris printing. This was a scholarly but popular biography based primarily on the work of the Spanish historian Navarrete. Navarrete had published his work on Columbus, which contained a number of previously unknown and significant documents. London: Putnam, 1957. First edition. 8vo, publisher’s original black cloth in dustjacket. 405. A fine copy. A FINE COPY OF THIS BRILLIANT WORK. Isak Dinesen, pseudonym for the Baroness Karen Blixen, was a Danish writer who wrote mainly in English and early on rejected bourgeois Danish society in favor of studying art in Copenhagen, Paris, and Rome. She married her cousin in 1914 and the two of them moved to Kenya to manage a coffee plantation. The two of them lived there until they divorced in 1925, after which she managed the plantation alone. Financial diffculties forced her to return to Denmark in 1931. She brought her lifelong passion for writing to fruition in 1934 with her first major work SEVEN GOTHIC TALES, a macabre and bizarre collection of neo-Gothic fantasy stories. A number of works followed, including her most well-known OUT OF AFRICA in 1937, an account of her experiences at her and her husband’s failed Kenyan plantation.
