FASCINATING WORK OF MIXED MEDIA WHICH COMBINES DELICATE HAND-PAINTING AND PRINT IN THE SERVICE OF FASHION AND COMMERCE, BEING AN ALBUM OF 52 DESIGNS FOR KIMONO. "In the Meiji era (1868-1912), Japan became active on the global stage, embracing new technologies, fashions, and design trends from the Western world. During this period, kimono design books were revived and evolved into print albums known as zuan-cho (literally 'design idea books'). These print albums circulated among artists, designers, kimono merchants, and wealthy patrons in Japan's major cities. Combining bold colors, geometric lines, and influences from Western styles such as Art Nouveau,… Read More

Description:
Omiya Kyusuke, 1867. Very good. Broadsheet (354 x 235 mm) with contemporary hand-coloring (several wormholes in the face of the robber and one above his head; portion of the paper on upper right defective, just touching text), affixed at upper corners to a sheet of modern paper. DRAMATIC ILLUSTRATION OF THE STRANGE TALE OF YABUHARA KENGYO, a villainous blind masseur / accupuncturist who was the subject of many Japanese folktales of the 19th-20th century. It is thought that he is based on some historical personage, but this has never been verified. The story goes that he killed his teacher and devoted himself to a life of crime. Here the evil Yabuhara, with an acupuncture needle in his mouth, having untied the victim's belt, rustles through the poor peddler's clothes seeking valuables. THE LEGEND: This fiendish blind masseur was originally named Sugi no Ichi. He kills a peddler in the mountains of Hakone and steals his money. The murderer also kills his teacher (Yabuhara Kengyo I) and then succeeds… Read More

Description:
Japan, 1830. One large hanging scroll, signed and sealed "Jippensha Ikku" (unfurled: 1620 x 330 mm; 63" x 13"). Original thin Japanese paper backed and mounted on thicker paper in the maru-hyoso style. Browning and darkening, creases (one is significant, for which SEE IMAGES), light stains, original paper with losses, mostly in the blank margins (SEE IMAGES), some repairs. Housed in a plain wooden box tied with red ribbon (415 x 65 x 60 mm; 16.25" x 2.5" x 2.25"), small piece inside box lid missing. RARE AND FASCINATING PAINTED SCROLL OF TWO "GOZE" (VISUALLY-IMPAIRED JAPANESE WOMEN MUSICIANS). HIGHLY ORGANIZED AND STRICTLY REGULATED GOZE WORKERS' ASSOCATIONS EMERGED IN THE 17TH CENTURY AND SPREAD THROUGHOUT JAPAN. NOW LITTLE KNOWN (ESPECIALLY IN WESTERN CULTURES), THESE EXTREMELY EARLY "UNIONS" AFFORDED VISUALLY IMPAIRED WOMEN AN UNPRECEDENTED DEGREE OF INDEPENDENCE AND PROTECTION. Goze travelled from village to village, entertaining audiences by singing and playing a three-stringed instrument… Read More

Description:
Paris, 1969. Very good. 1 leaf (210 X 297mm), dactylograph on recto/verso, dated 30 September 1969. ¶ SCARCE ANTI-PSYCHIATRY MANIFESTO BY THE "GROUPE LETTRISTE," a French avant-garde movement which involved political theory, art, film, and poetry. "Lettrism" was founded in Paris in the mid-1940s by Romanian Isidore Isou. Lettrism was inspired by Dada and Surrealism, but was far more political. In May and June 1968, Isou was committed to the clinic of Doctor Ferdiere, who had treated (among others) Antonin Artaud and Georges Bataille. Isou vigorously attacks Ferdiere's controversial electro-shock treatment to which he had been submitted. In the present Anti-Psychiatry manifesto, Isou attacks Ferdiere for having "killed" Artaud and also Gabrielle Russier, an associate professor of literature. Born in 1937, Russier committed suicide in 1969 after being convicted of having sexual relations with a 16 year-old former student. Isou likens Ferdiere as the "Eichmann of Nazi Psychiatry." Lettriste tracts… Read More

Description:
Sicily, Naples and Turin, 1764. Very good. Together 6 items: 1 broadside (46 x 34.5 cm) + 5 bandi (folio sheets, each folded once, various sizes, various wear, some signatures clipped, others supplied in manuscript, assorted manuscript annotations, extracted from bindings). Small but very interesting collection of Bandi on the prohibition of tobacco, all scarce (none are found in OCLC / FirstSearch). As there was no centralized government in Italy, the restrictions on Tobacco was a quagmire of regional taxation, restriction, and monopolization, as is attested by the bandi in the present collection. Increasing tobacco consumption in the Italian penensula merited the establishment of fiscal laws by various States. The present items illustrate the expansion of tobacco culture, and the disjointed governmental responses from Sicily, Naples, and Turin: 1. Broadside: Carlo [...] La Regia Giunta eretta da S.M. per il Dritto proibitivo del Tabacco (3 May 1758). 2. Noi il Conte d' Americo Amari [...] del… Read More

Description:
Nagoya, Japan: Fukada Zuan Kenkyūjo, 1921. Taishō 10. Very good. Large 8vo (254 x 187 mm). COMPLETE SET of 30 color-printed embroidery patterns, housed in original illustrated envelope with original string fastener. First leaf with considerable foxing, others with very light foxing or offsetting, envelope with a few marks and creases. Overall in very good condition. ECLECTIC "NON-TRADITIONAL" 1920s EMBROIDERY DESIGNS FOR "EVERYDAY" ITEMS, SUBTLY DEMONSTRATING THE TAISHO ROMAN STYLE IN WHICH WESTERN MOTIFS WERE EMBRACED BY JAPANESE "MOGA" (MODERNS GIRLS). THESE JAPANESE YOUTHQUAKERS SOUGHT TO FREE THEMSELVES FROM TRADITIONAL JAPANESE COSTUME AND -- BY EXTENSION -- TRADITIONAL JAPANESE SOCIAL CUSTOM. Viewed today, the "Taisho Roman" aesthetic may seem somewhat tame but in fact it signaled a dramatic shift in fashion and culture that was fostered by growing liberalism and industrialization during the Taisho era (i.e. 1912-1926). This style is characterized by its "Roaring 20s" reinterpretation of… Read More
