New York: Wilmore-Andrews Publishing Co, 1895. Later printing. Hardcover. Very Good. Small 8vo. [5], 8-391, [1] [6] (pages of publisher's advertisements) pp. Blue publisher's cloth with purple and silver decorations and silver lettering on the front board and spine. Encyclopedia Britannica, "Olive Schreiner". This is Schreiner's semi-autobiographical novel, and was a nearly-instant success. It is a staunchly feminist novel and espouses views that go against traditional Christian and Victorian gender roles. The main character works on an ostrich farm, and all the while must fight to live the life that is right for her. Olive Schreiner would go on to campaign for societal reforms for women throughout the rest of her life, and she would go on to become an outspoken opponent of Cecil Rhodes. A small separation between the backstrip and the textblock, the first gathering is a bit shaken but the binding is secure.
