Description:
London: Methuen & Co., 1894. Ibsen wrote "Brand" in 1865; he considered his protagonist, a difficult man certainly, with a strict moral code, to be somewhat autobiographic. First published in English in 1891; this is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the Second Edition by Methuen (several publishers issued this title around the same time). Not common. Green cloth binding with silver titling on the spine and front cover. Clean text; xv, 301 pages, with 24 pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. The ads are dated October 1893; the Preface places the publication at December 1893, rather than 1894, on the Title Page.Light scattered spotting, mostly close to the endpapers. The corners are bumped but not frayed, and there is a bump across the top affecting both boards. Still, a very solid and attractive copy of an important play by a theatrical giant.. Second Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

New York: United States Book Company Successor to John W. Lovell Company, 1891. Perhaps Ibsen's greatest play; certainly Hedda is acknowledged as one of the greatest roles for an actor. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First American Edition, issued in the same year as the English version and the year of its premier production in Germany. Rare. The translation from the original Norwegian is by Edmund Gosse. Translator's Note states that it is the only authorized version (in the 19th Century, prior to the establishment of copyright agreements, pirate editions were common). Green cloth binding with titling on the front cover is dark green; the spine is a darker green with gilt titling (replicates the English issue). Clean text; 273 pages, with six pages of publisher's adverts in the rear. Previous-owner signature (pencil, 1904) on the FFEP. Light bumps; moderate soiling and a small stain on the front cover.
