Nuremberg, 1517. Paperback. Very Good+. Woodcut at beginning of chapter 12 in Emperor Maximilian's epic "Theurdank" or “The media of his day.” Also includes the opening image from chapter 43. Printed in attractive Old German script. The illustrations in the "Theurdank" were produced by a team of artists: Leonard Beck, student of Dürer: Hans Schaüfelein, and Hans Burgkmair - a reputable Augsburg artist who was also involved in Maximilian's "Genealogie." The drawings they produced were then cut by Jost Dienecker of Antwerp. The finished romance tale was a masterpiece of the German Renaissance. (Size: 360 x 255mm).

The photographic reproductions from other sources, magazines. Included, as examples: Belgians shooting a spy at sunrise, various battle scenes, etc. Neatly and carefully assembled compilation. 1914-1916. The red scrapbook, lettered, "Book Shelf Scrap Book" on front cover, is copyrighted 1931, The Educational Press.

Early marbled boards, cloth backstrip; three plays bound together; pp. 107, 110, 68, each with original wraps and frontispiece portrait of its author. Some light rubbing at spine tips; boards a bit chipped along the edges; text block brittle, with the occasional small chip along the edges.

Spines a bit sunned, lightly chipped at tips, the occasional water spot here and there. Lacking Volume 13, Gosse's "Life of Ibsen." Overall, a handsome working set, internally clean, and gilt remains nice and bright. This item will likely require additional shipping charges.

Mexico: Editorial Porrua, 1946. Hardcover. Near Fine. Gilt-ruled burgundy morocco. Extremities a little scuffed, else fine. A very pretty volume, illustrated throughout.

London: printed for C. Taylor, 1787. First Edition. Full Leather. Near Fine. Two volumes in contemporary calf, elegantly rebacked in light tan calf with dark brown morocco labels, raised bands, spine compartments gilt. 8 x 7 inches (20.5 x 18 cm); various paginations, with 45 and 50 superb engravings respectively, including engraved titles (the latter count including the ten engraved landscapes), largely stipple-engraved plates executed by Taylor and Ogborne mostly after designs by Samuel Shelley and Robert Smirke. Originally issued in parts, the work is rarely found complete with all plates. As the publishers state "Gentlemen may bind any numbers together to make a volume, and in any order they please," as a consequence of which few copies have the full quota of plates. The authors represented include Shakespeare, Milton, Pope, Gay, Burns, Goldsmith and others.

Wraps; 167 x 223 mm; pp. [2] (title-p., frontis.), 97 (hand-numbered), [39]; handwritten on lined paper in blue or black ink, with more than 50 drawings, in-text or full-page, in pencil and/or ink, most of them colored with pencil or gouache. Covers scuffed and worn. Some light dust-smuding throughout, and the occasional tape repair, but overall internally bright and clean. Includes lyrics for "La Vie a la Caserne," "Pouet Pouet," "Gitana," "Les Belles Meres," "Mimosette," "Le Jardin de Ma Cousine," "Seduction," and many others, copied out in tidy script. Old vellum, manuscript spine and upper board; 8vo (150 x 165 mm); pp. 189, with woodcut portrait of the author on title-p., numerous in-text illustrations showing hands with varying palm lines and Greco-Roman deities associated with palmistry, physiognomic contrasts in pairs of faces, and astrological diagrams. Vellum a little soiled; front hinge cracked (holding just fine, with cords intact); contents evenly tanned. Indagine was pastor of Steynheym and deacon of St. Leonhart in Frankfurt. His popular treatise on palmistry (chiromancy), physiognomy, and astrology, was originally published in 1522, and reprinted into the 17th century. Caillet 5388. Thorndike V, 66.

Grey cloth over boards (9.75” x 7.5”) with “Photographs” blindstamped on upper board; 23 grey heavy cardstock leaves, 17 of which feature tipped-on black-and-white photographs (90 images in all, most of them 3” x 4”, though some are a bit larger or smaller) with handwritten notations. Fine – a careful and tidy collection of photographs, all neatly tipped-on, labeled, and dated by hand. Np, circa late 19th century. An apparently unpublished work of fiction, relating to one of the Native American tribes of the Great Plains region, the Mandans. The manuscript purports to be the story of Menahka, a Mandan chief, as told to “one of the Fur Company's traders in the Far West” who signed his name as “X.Y.” It’s possible that Menahka and his wife Edayhush were historical figures, but we could not locate them. The two words do have basic meaning in the Mandan language: Menahka being the Mandan word for sun, and Edayhush, the Mandan word for light. Menahka is presented as being the last surviving member of the tribe, after an 1837 smallpox epidemic and attacks by Sioux enemies.
