On verso are 37 lines of printed text, including a Lombardic style two-line initial and section title in larger typeface. Mounted on white art boards with blue marbled border. Image 23 x 19 cm. Contemporary brown calf with "Knowledge in a Nutshell" on front cover in blind and titles of the books in gilt on spine (some vertical crazing, upper hinge cracked inside and beginning to feel loose, opening slightly at the bottom). Rounded corners. George Henry James & Co were makers of fancy de luxe cases and leather goods at 14,Newgate Street, London EC and, from c.1903, 48 Old Bailey, London. Provenance: William Usher Crookshank, from Johnstounburn, East Lothian -son of Chichester de Windt Crookshank M.P. Garbett, 17. Welsh, 4167. Welsh only locates Bryce edition - James edition unrecorded. The last three books have Bryce as the publisher & it is the first book that has a James imprint. This is a rare and unrecorded variant imprint of a classic David Bryce publication.
