This was Hayek’s first book based on his work with the London School of Economics and the result of the 1931 lectures that began his LSE career and led to his naturalization as a British citizen. This copy is the 1949 fourth printing of the second (“revised and enlarged”) edition – the sixth issue of this book in English. There were two printings of the first edition – 1931 and 1932 – followed by four printings of the second edition – 1935, 1941, 1946, and this 1949 printing. This despite the bibliographically erroneous “Sixth Impression” printed on the front face of the dust jacket. Condition is very good in a very good minus dust jacket. This was Hayeks first book based on his work with the London School of Economics and the result of the 1931 lectures that began his LSE career and led to his naturalization as a British citizen. Condition is very good. The original card wraps remain complete and firmly attached, despite moderate overall soiling, toning, and wear to extremities. The contents are complete with light, intermittent spotting. We find no previous ownership marks. The untrimmed fore and bottom edges remain respectably clean, some spotting and shelf dust showing only on the top edges. Condition of both volume and dust jacket is conservatively graded as very good plus. The blue cloth binding is tight and unfaded with bright spine gilt, minimal wear confined to extremities, a slight forward lean, and a hint of faint, whitish mottling to the boards. The contents remain respectably bright. The sole previous ownership mark is the authors inscription. Differential toning to the endpapers corresponds to the dust jacket flaps and confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. This is the first edition, first printing of the first novel published by one of the twentieth century’s pioneering and preeminent science fiction authors. First printing is confirmed by the Scribner’s “A” on the copyright page. Later states of the first printing dust jacket are known to have the original, printed “$2.00” price clipped from the upper front flap and a replacement “$2.50” price ink-stamped thereon. This jacket is a presumed later state; the original “$2.00” price is clipped and there is an additional small rectangle clipped from the front flap between the title and author’s name where, it seems plausible to assume, an ink-stamped “$2.50” price may also have been clipped by a later seller. Wollheim’s publisher’s review copy, a collector-worthy example in dust jacket and an important association copy that belonged to “one of the most important editorial influences on sf”. Doubleday & Company’s bright yellow “BOOK FOR REVIEW” slip is laid in at the half-title, specifying a publication date of “October 11, 1951”. Wollheim’s name is ink-stamped on the verso of the final blank endpaper and is the only previous ownership mark in the book. Condition is fine in a near fine dust jacket. The cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners. We note no appreciable soiling or wear and only minor wrinkling to the spine ends. The contents show only age-toning to the page edges and inner margins, but are otherwise unspoiled, with no soiling or spotting. This pamphlet publishes speeches delivered before Parliament by MP Emrys Hughes on 6th, 10th, and 18th March 1952 during the second and final premiership of Winston S. Churchill. This copy is in very good minus condition. This 13-page pamphlet is bound in wire-stitched self-wraps, printed on light, cheap pulp paper stock. This copy’s chief flaws are one inch splits to the top and bottom of the spine. The contents are clean with mild soiling only to the blank rear page. A light horizontal crease runs along the center of the pamphlet. Emrys Hughes (1894-1969) was a Socialist MP highly critical of Churchill. In 1952 Hughes published Winston Churchill in War and Peace, of which bibliographer Curt Zoller says: "Hughes's book criticizes even Churchill's Battle of Britain speeches and makes some telling points: a polemic worth reading."
