A highly interesting letter about religion and politics. President Truman thanks Bishop Oxnam, an active leader of the Federal Council of Churches and Americans for Democratic Action. for sending him a copy of his recent speech to the Conference of Methodist Bishops in Boston. He writes in part: "There is a great need in these troublous days for the leadership of the church which you suggest. We must not only proclaim the Christian ideal. We must live it." C. with kindest regards and best wishes, Harry Truman." Congressman Dolye represented the 23d California District a portion of which included Los Angeles. He was a rabid Anti- Communist and authored a number of bills attempting to outlaw the Communist party. He was a vocal member of the House Un-American Activities Committee and a strong supporter of President Truman's Loyalty Program, requiring loyalty oaths and background investigations on persons deemed suspect of membership in organizations considered subversive or anti-democratic. He died in 1963, while serving his 9th term in Congress and was acting chairman of HUAC at the time. A striking photograph and strong inscription. and an excellent political association item.. Fresh from his fateful nomination in Chicago to become FDR's Vice Presidential running mate, Truman thanks one of his World War I comrades and fellow senators for his support. "I cannot tell you how much I appreciated your letter of congratulations, Bess and I were both sorry we didn't get to see you and Mrs. Bowman again before we left Chicago. I am leaving today for a fishing trip over the week end and also hope to get a little rest. They almost tore me to pieces when I was home.... In this highly interesting letter Hemingway refers to Gustav Regler who served in the German Infantry during the First World War and was seriously injured. He joined the Communist Partyand spent time in the USSR. He later served as political commissar of the II International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. In Spain he befriended Ernest Hemingway and was wounded at the Battle of Guadalajara. Hemingway mentions in this letter that he wrote the introduction to Regler's book "The Great Crusade."
