Description:
Glasgow: Maclehose [for the Hakluyt Society], 1905. Twelve volumes, octavo, illustrated throughout with maps (many folding), proof impressions of the plates; essentially an excellent set in the original quarter parchment gilt over blue cloth boards, top edges gilt others uncut. A fine set of the famous Maclehose edition of Hakluyt, 'the first lecturer on modern geography and one of the leading spirits of Elizabethan maritime expansion' (PMM). This handsome production reprints the second and best edition of Hakluyt's magnum opus, the classic of travel literature. The first English collection of voyages, the work has always been recognised as one of the gems of Elizabethan letters. Although intended to be devoted to American discoveries and the British colonisation of America, and published a few years before the Dutch voyage of the Duyfken to the west coast of Cape York in 1605, it is significant that by the time of the revised second edition, Hakluyt was able to include the first tentative forays of… Read More

Description:
London: W. Innys, R. Manby, T. Woodward, 1743. Some very light browning and two plates bound in upside down; spines rubbed, hinges starting but firm.. Two volumes, octavo, five folding plates, contemporary speckled calf. First edition: Hales' ventilators became known as "ship's lungs", and were so appreciated by eighteenth-century sailors, and contributed so significantly to an improvement in seaboard conditions, that captains reported the crews needed little encouragement to work the machines. After a leisurely twelve years in residence at Cambridge, Hales (1677-1761) took up a parish and became heavily involved in local affairs, but this did not preclude him from a long and productive scientific career. His continuing fame was assured with these two books, which effectively invented artificial ventilation. Designed to draw fresh air into confined spaces, his machines were installed in His Majesty's ships, merchant vessels, slave ships, in hospitals, even at the court of King's Bench, the Drury… Read More

Description:
Sydney: Hordern House, 1998. Facsimile of the rare original edition of 1793; introductory essay by Peter Gesner, Curator of Marine Archaeology at the Queensland Museum. Edition strictly limited to 900 copies. Small octavo (220 x 140 mm), 204 pages, with five illustrations and a frontispiece map, printed on Raleigh Tomohawk Text; hand bound by Newbold & Collins in quarter cherry Scottish calf. A Voyage Round the World in His Majesty's Frigate Pandora is one of the rarest and least known eighteenth-century publications relating to Bligh's infamous mutiny on the Bounty. Now for the first time since 1793, this book has been faithfully reproduced complete with the frontispiece portrait of Hamilton, and enriched by modern scholarship, as part of the Australian Maritime Series. The story of the Pandora - the ship which was sent to recover the Bounty and to bring the mutineers to justice - is almost unknown to the modern public. Yet the story rivals even that of Bligh's mutiny on the Bounty for drama and… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam: Jan Jansz, 1645. Oblong folio, 28 pp.; in simple modern wrappers. First edition of one of the first Dutch voyages across the Indian Ocean, published as one of the separate pieces that were also combined to make up Commelin's voyage collection Begin ende Voortgangh. This is one of remarkably few printed references to the Duyfken, the tiny ship of huge importance to Australian history. Harmensz was in joint command of the third major voyage by the Dutch to the East-Indies, the so-called Moluccan Fleet of 1601-1603 which set out to establish a new Dutch presence in the East Indies. The five ships reached Bantam, Java, at the end of 1601 where they were confronted by a substantial Portuguese fleet of thirty ships under the command of Andrea Fortade de Mendoça. Harmensz's conquest of the Portuguese fleet marked a turning point in the history of the region, bringing to a close the domination of the Portuguese and Spanish in the Spice Trade to Europe. Of special interest to us today is that one… Read More

Paris: Librairie Plon, 1893. Front wrapper creased.. Octavo, folding map; uncut in the original blue-grey wrappers. A fine copy of the first edition: this is an especially good account of Hawaii at the end of the nineteenth century, by a French diplomat, written under the pseudonym Georges Sauvin. D'Anglade was French Consul and Commissioner to Hawaii and writes about Honolulu and the Hawaiian royal family from personal experience. His excellent memoir of life in Hawaii has been recently translated as A Tree in Bud: The Hawaiian Kingdom 1889-1893, with one wonderful quote making it to the internet: 'Everybody in Hawaii finds the businessman a sympathetic figure, for his constant concern is to 'make money'... This is his first object and ruling passion, toward which he dedicates all his faculties. All foreigners who settle in Hawaii are - or want to be - businessmen'. .

Oahu: Na na Misionari, 1834. Duodecimo, 360 pp., 194 hymns many with full musical notation; in excellent condition in old sprinkled and polished calf, later spine ornately gilt with red leather label; in a full calf protective bookform case. Rare and important: a delightful copy of this Hawaiian hymnal with extensive four-part musical scoring, the very first music to be printed in the Islands. The title translates as 'The rules of music, for hymns and psalms [with which] to praise God.' This title refers to the first section of the work (56 pp.), which is a musical instruction manual, beginning with 'names for various notes (sharps, flats, clefs, etc.) and ways of reading music; then scales and octaves (here La, Mi, Pa, Ko, Li, Ha, No, La); music notes with scores; and finally music and words.' (Forbes) The second part is a hymnal with 194 hymns. Copies were known to have been distributed before the work as a whole was completed (and some copies are known with only the first 56-page section).… Read More

Most of the imprints at the end of each number trimmed away or cropped (as often: the imprints appear very low on the page), but with decent margins throughout, signature clipped from upper corners of flyleaves; extremities rubbed, joints partly cracked but sound, generally in excellent, crisp condition.. 140 original numbers bound into two volumes, small folio; library bookplates with release stamps, small stamps on title-pages; in contemporary tree calf, spines gilt in compartments between raised bands with ornate double labels;. Cook's editor's influential literary periodical: the first edition, in an elegant contemporary binding. It was because of the prolific literary skills and the versatile pen exhibited in works like The Adventurer that Hawkesworth was appointed to compile the official account of the voyages, based on the journals kept by Captain James Cook and others, selling the copyright to Strahan and Cadell for the then immense sum of £6000. Description:
London, 1785. Fine condition.. Original watercolour on paper with faint outline of engraving, 250 x 360 mm., signed and dated lower right, mounted. An original watercolour by the highly regarded artist William Hayes (1727-1799) Despite a complete lack of training in any field, Hayes discovered a natural aptitude for painting birds. His first book, A Natural History of British Birds, 1775, was fifteen years in the making, and many of the birds were drawn from life either during field trips or from specimens he kept in captivity. Others were drawn from specimens sent to him by the Duchess of Portland's birdkeeper. In the mid-1780s Hayes went to live at Southall, a short walk from Osterly Park. Osterly, remodelled by Robert Adam in the 1760s, was owned by the Childs. Like the Duchess of Portland, Sarah Child was an enthusiastic collector of exotic birds. When Horace Walpole visited Osterly Park in 1773, he admired "the menagerie full of birds that came from a 1000 islands, which Mr. Banks has not yet… Read More

Description:
Paris: chez Breaute, 1861. Some fading, and light scuffing. Very good. 12mo., uncut, in the original pink printed wrappers. First edition and very scarce: through natural aptitude and indefatigable perseverance Mlle. Hertha discovers the truths of the universe. This work is an abstract from Hertha's longer text Égalité-Liberté, and is presented to her public in the hope of making her doctrine more widely understood. Humbly, it claims to have solved all of the problems which plague humanity, including many long held to be insoluble. Hertha claims that all matter has the essence and attributes of God, and lacks only his supreme power: 'L'espèce humaine, se dirigeant par elle-même, n'étant soumise à aucune puissance qui lui soit supérieure est le seul arbitre de sa destinée.' Having established this, the work goes on to delineate the ways in which a society of responsible individuals parallels the cohesive and motive force of the universe. .

Description:
Hanhndorf, 1932. Charcoal, chalk and coloured pencil on paper 43.0 x 65.0 cms, in the original frame, with the stamp and label of Heysen's studio in Hahndorf on the verso. A conservationist ahead of his time, and "the first Australian painter to focus on the eucalpytus tree as an artistic subject", the celebrated artist Hans Heysen (1877-1968) fell in love with the landscape around the Flinders Ranges, travelling there for the first time in 1926, and making many more trips between 1927 and 1949. His work reflects his deep appreciation and understanding of nature. This atmospheric landscape study reflects the wild untamed scenery of the Bunyeroo Valley, one of the main gorges which runs through the range of mountains named for the artist, towards Lake Torrens. The Heysen Trail, a walking track stretching 1,500 kilometres from Cape Jervis to Parachilna Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, was also named in his honour. . Provenance: Sir Val Duncan, London, thence by descent; private collection New South Wales.

Description:
London: Francis Edwards, 1952. Endpapers slightly spotted, otherwise fine.. Octavo; original brown cloth. One of 500 copies published of this early and influential Cook bibliography, by the doyen of Cook collecting, Sir Maurice Holmes. One of two standard bibliographical references for the voyages of Captain Cook, it is discursive and more attuned to the collector than Beddie's bibliography, which by comparison is encyclopaedic. This is the second and best version, revised and greatly expanded from Holmes' original 1936 essay (which, notes Holmes, 'contained one shocking howler... and half a dozen more venial errors'). It was put together by a significant collector: Holmes' Cook collection is today part of the libraries of UCLA. Like Holmes' earlier and less authoritative "Introduction to the Bibliography of Captain Cook" of 1936 it was published by the English bookseller Francis Edwards, at that time well known for its specialisation in books of voyages and travels. .

London: Henry Colburn, 1838. Fine condition.. Engraving, 210mm x 142mm, in fine condition. A wonderful portrait of Joseph Holt (1756-1826), one of the most prominent Irish convicts of the early years of settlement at Sydney Cove. In 1798 Holt joined a band of rebels engaged in six months of guerrilla conflict near Dublin, but was captured in November of that year and sentenced to transportation. Aboard the convict transport Minerva Holt won the respect of Lieutenant William Cox (the man who oversaw the building of the road across the Blue Mountains) and became manager of his farms at Dundas and Canterbury upon their arrival. Despite displaying loyalty and great intelligence, Holt's seditious past proved a terrible burden: in September 1800 he was accused of treason and later acquitted by Governor King. Again in 1804 he was falsely accused of involvement in the rebellion at Castle Hill and sent to Norfolk Island, returning to Sydney two years later to work land he had purchased while working for Cox.… Read More

Paris: Belin-Leprieur et Morizot, 1847. Some foxing and embrowning throughout, some crude paper repairs to bottom right-hand corner of both volumes (not affecting text), otherwise a good set.. Two volumes, octavo, frontispiece in each volume and 38 black & white plates in the text; in contemporary quarter morocco. A very detailed illustrated history of the grands voyages for children, including La Pérouse and the third voyage of James Cook with an apparently original version of the "Death of Cook". The second last chapter of the book has a sketch of the natives of New South Wales based on the account of Dumont d'Urville, who visited Australia in 1827. Hombron actually sailed with Dumont d'Urville as surgeon and naturalist on his voyage to the Antarctic. This compendious work details the history of voyaging and, as commonly, gravitates towards tales of wreck and ruin. As might be expected in a French work, there is a great deal on La Pérouse, including sections on his battles in Hudson Bay, his… Read More
