1693 1ed Hacket Scrinia Reserata John Williams King James William Laud Puritans

John Hacket was a 17th-century Anglican bishop who is best known for his biography of Archbishop John Williams. Williams was the personal advisor to King James I and supported Puritan movements much in part to his disdain for William Laud. Hacket's biography, 'Scrinia Reserata', is unquestionably the best and most reliable biography of John Williams.
This 1693 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It has long been considered a valuable source on the reign of King James I and his feuds with William Laud.

1721 Japanese Sword Katana Arami Meizukushi Illustrated Handwritten New Blades

An interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of 'New Blades.' This collection is the stamping of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Edo period and is equivalent to the sword of the Meiji era and later called "modern sword.". It follows up on the older collections of blade writings which summarized the accumulated knowledge of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Muromachi period. After the battle of Sekigahara in Keicho 4 (AD 1599), the Tokugawa shogunate opened and war ended, demand and production methods for swords changed, and later works came to be called "new swords." This 'New Blades' book includes information on large and small swords, knives, tools for forgings, polishing, and repairing, as well as stamps of sword makers and the illustrious line patterns between the edge and spine called the Hamon.

Description:
1827 1st ed Imprisonment INQUISITION Juan Van Halen TORTURE Voyages Caucasus
A Spaniard of Dutch heritage, Juan Van Halen (1788-1864) entered the Spanish navy in 1803, sailing to Cuba and Mexico. In 1808 he became involved in the Peninsula Campaign, first fighting for the Spanish, then briefly joining the French after being taken prisoner, and finally returning to the Spanish side, boldly fooling the French into surrendering three forts by dressing as a French officer and presenting forged documents announcing a treaty. He received a promotion for this coup, but in 1817 fell victim to the Inquisition and was (according to his own account) imprisoned and tortured. Escaping to Russia, he spent 18 months as a colonel in the Caucasus Dragoon Regiment under General Yermalov in Tblisi, Georgia.

Despite some likely fictional elements, this1827 account of his adventures is generally regarded as based in truth. British traveler and scholar John Frederick Baddeley describes it as "one of the best of the early… Read More
