His excellency Sheikh Hafiz Wahba, an Egyptian, served as advisor to King Abd Al-Aziz Al Sa'ud and describes the immense sociological changes forced upon Arabia by the exploitation of the mineral wealth. He further devotes chapters to the Ikhwan, an Islamic brotherhood which formed the core of the Saudi militia in the 1920s and 1930s. Under later Saudi rule they were disbanded and vilified.

Original maroon ribbed cloth, lettered and decorated in gilt, top edge gilt; pp. xxxi, 351, portrait-frontispiece in sepia photogravure, one further photogravure portrait, two colour plates, numerous black and white plates, mostly after photographs, folding map of Alligator Shooting Ground; two corners with slight bumps, offsetting from endpapers to beginning and end; otherwisae a very attractive copy. First edition of a thorough and extensive monograph on Jamaica. The author was a member of a visiting party composed of British politcians, investors, 'capitalists', and land owners. The result is one of the first books really trying to understand Obeahism, Voodo, and how the African population organized themselves after the abolition of slavery, which is described in detail, as well as the devastating earthquake of 1907. There is as well a section on the East Indian population in the West Indies, sugar and cotton production.

XI and XIII, January and July 1822) in 8vo and the original printed wrappers; pp. 107-111, one engraved map; 71-75, one engraved plan; the January issue with a little waterstaining towards the end affecting the map; otherwise very good, clean and largely unopened. First editions. Francis Hamilton was a Scottish surgeon and botanist who joined the East India Comapny and Captain Michael Symes' political mission to Ava in Burma, the first attempt of Britain to reach out towards the secluded kingdom. Both articles describe and reproduce maps received by Hamilton from a slave at Amarapura. He then discusses discrepancies between different native Burmese maps and relates them to Western geographical methods.

Inscribed by author to front free endpaper. First edition. A dystopian science-fiction novel about post-apocalypse britain, where roaming gangs rule supreme and mutant lizards lurk in the shadows. When a lizard is born to a human, a group of men set out to deliver the baby to its own kind. As Harrison's debut novel, this is rare find, but especialy in the dust wrapper. This copy is inscribed by the author thus: "For Phil — Ah, those long centuries in Ankor Wat — Mike H." The recipient is Philip Horowitz, brother of the author Anthony Horowitz, from whence Sotherans acquired this copy.

First edition. The author worked in the service of the Nawab of Took, in Hindustan. A Muslim, the Nawab in January 1870 received permission to make the pilgrimage to Mecca. Ahmed Hassan accompanied him and his account includes details of the crossing from Bombay to Jeddah, of the visits to Mecca and Medina, and of the continuation of his journey to England. The first-hand account by a pilgrim is very uncommon.
