Paris, 1885. First and only edition of this extremely rare booklet of Quechua (Inca) poems IN THE ORIGINAL LANGUAGE (with Spanish translations), an offprint from volume 15 of the Actes de la Société Philologique. pp. 91-107. The first poem, Chimbaycela's "Cushiquillca", is translated by Luís Cordero. The second, Guaman's "Rinimi, llacta" is translated by the author. A brief note on the lorelei (by Charles Schoebel) follows, and finally a letter to the Pope, with the complete text in Kalispel (Pend d'Oreille, an Indian language of the American Northwest), Latin, and English. Large 8vo. Original plain wraps. ENTIRELY UNCUT. FINE AND BRIGHT. Very rare, especially in such pristine condition.

A REMARKABLE SURVIVAL: A PRISTINE COPY ON VELLUM, IN SHEETS, IN THE ORIGINAL ENVELOPE. 23 pp. A beautiful little fine press book, and the first book in the St. George Series. Forde's inspirational verses, with the stunning art nouveau woodcuts by I. de B. Lockyer (half-title, title, and frontispiece.) : The striking frontispiece depicting St. George serenely slaying the dragon appears here for the first time. One of only 21 numbered copies PRINTED ON VELLUM. This copy is of particularly great interest as it is preserved in unbound sheets enclosed in the original (somewhat worn) publisher's envelope, where we find "I. Fruit of the Spirit. Real vellum Nº 13" neatly inscribed in ink. 8vo. FINE AND BRIGHT, AS NEW WITH NO DEFECTS. Also included is a pristine copy of the regular edition, printed on extremely fine handmade Whatman wove paper and sewn into the original wraps. Uncut, and also in perfect condition.

Hacks (who often used the pseudonym "Docteur Bataille") examines the gestures of children and adults, ancients and moderns, rich and poor, educated and ignorant--he even presents a rather erotic play which consists of entirely gestures (except for one spoken word). Edinburgh and London: Oliver & Boyd, 1926-1962. Nine volumes, complete. The second, best, and most complete edition. The standard bibliography of pseudonymous and anonymous books in English from the 15th century until 1950. A monumental reference, covering over 65,000 books. No serious dealer or collector of English books can afford to be without this work. Large 4to. Publisher's cloth. The bindings of the earlier volumes are a bit worn, but still completely solid. There is a little faint spotting here and there (as always) because of impurities in the paper, but the paper is generally clean and bright. Overall an excellent set, with no real defects. Very, very scarce in such fine condition.

Brixton Hill: For private circulation only (printed by C. and J. Adlard), 1847. FIRST EDITION OF THE ALLITERATIVE MORTE ARTHURE, one of the great monuments of Arthurian literature and of Medieval English literature. This poem, like Gawain and the Green Knight, is part of the late Medieval literary movement now called the "alliterative revival". According to Larry Benson, the most recent editor of this poem, the Alliterative Morte Arthure "lacks the delicacy and balance of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, but the vigor of its narrative, the epic sweep of its action, and its coolly realistic presentation of fourteenth-century warfare lend the poem an interest of its own." Paris: Arthème Fayard, 1922. ONE OF ONLY TEN COPIES ON JAPANESE PAPER OF THE FIRST EDITION of this major autobiographical novel. Myriam Harry, born Maria Rosette Shapira into a Protestant family (her father had converted from Judaism) in Jerusalem, won the first Prix Femina in 1905 (the prize had been created because the Prix Goncourt could not be won by a woman). From a total large-paper issue of 100 numbered copies, this is ONE OF ONLY 10 PRINTED ON JAPON. Attractively bound in quarter morocco and marbled boards by FRANZ (signed). Fore- and lower edges uncut. Traces of wear to binding, internally FINE AND BRIGHT. Obviously very rare.

This copy belonged to Harvard medievalist Taylor Starck, with his signature and the date (1942) on front pastedown. Extensively annotated by Starck throughout. Includes a leaf of notes, in Starck's hand, on the stationery of the Harvard German Department. Thick 8vo, contemporary buckram. Slight shelfwear to binding, else fine.
