Description:
Hampstead, 4 May 1883. 1 page 6 x 7½ inches, a few minor tears at folds. Carl Haag (1820-1915) was a German-born painter who became a naturalized British citizen, and court painter to the duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. He is known for his Oriental subjects. He was born in Erlangen (Bavaria), and was trained in the academies at Nuremberg and Munich. Haag practised first as an illustrator and as a painter, in oil, of portraits and architectural subjects; but after he settled in England, in 1847, he devoted himself to water colours, and was elected associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours in 1850 and member in 1853. He travelled much, especially in the East, and made a considerable reputation by his firmly drawn and carefully elaborated paintings of Eastern subjects. Towards the end of his professional career Carl Haag quitted England and returned to Germany where he died in Oberwesel.

Description:
11 Bloomsbury Square, London 16 May 1848. 4 pp. 9 x 7 inches, folds, in good condition. Spencer Timothy Hall (1812-1885), known as the Sherwood Forester, mesmerist and miscellaneous writer. His letter includes mention of the poets Richard Howitt and Bernard Barton. Alas for poor Walter Crisp Ellis, about whom you inquire! One Saturday last winter, he was negociating for me with my poor alienated wife, and fell dead whilst washing himself on the following Tuesday morning! I am mesmerising again, truly enough - and am as truly much engaged, just as you suppose; and, just as you also suppose, that is the only cause of my not writing more to my friends in whose kind remembrance and forgiveness I have perhaps more faith than I ought to have.

Description:
Watisfield, 11 December 1750. 4 x 6½ inches, laid down, some staining. Thomas Harmer (1714-1788), Independent minister and church historian. Harmers reputation as a scholar and useful writer rested originally upon his Observations on Divers Passages of Scripture, Illustrated by Accounts of Travellers in the East, which was published initially in a single volume in 1764, but by 1787 had been extended to four volumes. A fourth edition, edited and revised by Dr Adam Clarke, appeared in 1808. However, Harmer is probably better remembered for his histories of the dissenting churches of East Anglia. Harmer remained minister at Wattisfield for fifty-four years, during which time he missed only one Sunday service through illness. [DNB]
