Description:
Edinburgh & London: William Blackwood & Sons, 1887. No author for this book of political cartoons is named, but it is George Roland Hackett (1855-1918), who did many such for Blackwood. This definitely has an anti-Fenian, anti-Gladstone, anti-Parnell point of view. Softbound, with ilustrated cover in green and black. Clean text; 30 pages, with topics such as "Parnell's Paid Patriots" and "Irish Crime." The opposing page has Hackett's black-and-white caricatures. There is no date, but per COPAC, it is 1887. The title page bears the chop of the Cambridge Union Society. There is a bit of minor chipping to the covers, which have ben protected with the addition of new paper endpapers.. First Edition. Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1887. One of the most famous high-spots of the "Lost World" adventure genre that was one of Haggard's specialties. Popular in its day, it has influenced much modern literary fantasy and been made into films. It is necessary to remember that Haggard wrote in a time of Empire, Eugenics, and Social Darwinism; but he personally was not on board with all of those lately discredited beliefs. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the Sixth Printing ("Thirty-First to Thirty-Fifth Thousand") of the First Edition. This copy is in a mixed-state: two of the points of issue (p. 59 & p. 126) are present; but the other two (p. 258 & p. 269) have been corrected. Original dark blue cloth binding with beveled edges; titling and decorations in gilt on spine and front cover. Clean text; 317 pages, with two pages of publisher adverts in the rear.Illustrated in the front with two coloured prints of "the Sherd of Amenartas" (an interpretation, not the…

London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1901. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First Edition. Dark blue cloth binding with titling in gilt on the spine and front cover. Only a touch of wear to the tips. There are two faint library stamps; assumed to be private. This is a heavy book and often suffers "structural challenges," but they are minimal here. London, New York, and Bombay: Longmans, Green and Co., 1896. One of Haggard's "Lost City" books that one could say defined the genre. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy of the First English Edition (the US edition came out in the previous year). Dark blue cloth binding, beveled at the edges; with gilt titling on the spine and front cover. Clean text; 347 pages; with a 24-page publisher's catalog in the rear. The endpapers are a shiny black, an unusual choice. There is a frontis illustration, and fourteen others, by Amy Sawyer (1863-1945). The spine has faded to brown, but the gilt remains very bright. There is a contemporary (1897) signature on the second free endpaper; the first has been clipped. There is a cracked hinge at Page 208 - the only real defect, but it is holding well. A solid copy that presents very nicely.. First UK Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good (Plus)/No Jacket. Illus. by Amy Sawyer. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Description:
New York: John W. Lovell & Company, 1888. The First American edition was published by Collier in 1888; this is a Very Good (Minus) copy of a PIRATE edition from the same year. RARE. Softbound, with stiff card covers; titling on the front in black, with publisher and "Munro's Library" logo in red; dated "August 11, 1888. The spine lists this as "No. 846." Clean text; 130 pages; followed by a 30-page story, "A Dead Man's Face" by the English novelist Hugh Conway (pseudonym of Frederick John Fargus, 1847-1885). This story originally appeared in "Harper's New Monthly Magazine" in December 1884. Presumably Lovell lifted it from there, but Conway was three years gone by then and could not object. Nice period adverts. Pages are tanned but remain in sound condition; there is a chip to the last page, which foils the ending of the Conway story. Wear to the margins and with some wrinkling; spine chipped at top and bottom. A great artifact that has…
