Hansi's illustrations of Alsatian towns during the war are richly colorful and vivid. His plea for Alsace at the end of the book that Alsace will be beautiful when she is French and free...The book is internally VG - the covers have some soll, the spine has some fabric missing in 2 spots (at top/bottom), corners rubbed - so overall Good+. Uncommon Hansi title.

SPLENDID COPY of the Edition De Luxe w/ the Scarce Dust Wrapper & Custom-Made BoxThis Edition Deluxe is #44 of 250 copies with 60 designs by Walter Crane.Nineteen of these are beautifully detailed full-pg tipped-in color lithographs mounted withingilt borders.Small 4to, cream & gilt embossed with blind-stamped design, lovely gilt & cream eps and tissue guards issued loose to protect the plates (see publ note still present.) Accompanied by an olive green gilt silk dj (dj has 1/8" closed tear at bottom front spine which has been neatly repaired- archival glue. Only visible from behind - not on the green side. There was a crack at the top of spine edge which has been neatly repaired.Housed in a gilt-lettered drop-back blue box also VG.

Nothing is printed behind these pages - so there are blankdouble spreads between. Inside pages are very clean. Front cover has some dust soiling - but still retains a brightness. Up at top edge is written lightly in pencil the date 1880. A very small corner chip on front cover does not affect illustration at all.
