At the beginning of this period Malaya was reliant on imports for two thirds of its rice consumption due to a fairly laissez faire policy of leaving production to Malay padi farmers. That looked as if it might change in the 1930s with a shake up of the agriculture department, the founding of a school of agriculture and the creation of a Department of Irrigation. As part of their activities after taking over Sarawak from the Brooke administration, the British Government carried out a geological survey of the region. This work, covering the highest parts and most turbulent rivers of Sarawak, is the final one in the series. Few areas for mineral exploitation were found, but the area was discovered to have large reserves of limestone and shale suitable for cement manufacture. The work also includes two papers by J Harlan Johnson, CG Adams and R Hack on palaeontological issues in the area surveyed. 176 pages with an index.
