Rear has a b&w photo of Halsbertam as a correspondent for the New York Times. Halberstam's personal account of his fifteen months in South Vietnam as a New York Times foreign correspondent. He describes how the U.S. first became involved and why. Halberstam is prolific in his indictment of the conduct and leadership of the war in the field, of the delusions of the American military and diplomatic leaders there, and of the falsified and misleading statistics foisted on U.S. correspondents and newspaper readers. He became a subject of controversy for resisting enormous pressure from both Washington and the Vietnamese government to report the war optimistically.
