Description:
In his theater related early letter, Gance discusses his new and very long play and his desire to see "La Pisanelle." He includes one bar of music likely from "La Pisanelle," which he hoped to attend with his correspondent, Roland. "La Pisanelle," was a "Comedy in Three Acts" by Gabrielle D'Annunzio and choreographed by Fokine performed in Paris in 1913. The full title is, "La Pisanelle ou La mort parfumée." Gance begins the letter with the declaration, "My Victoire is complete and I leave it to 'La Dame' about whom I wanted to talk with you...." He likely refers to the five hour long tragedy he wrote, "Victoire de Samothrace." He had hoped Sarah Bernhardt, "La Dame" would star opposite him. Our research indicates that she had agreed to the performance, however, the outbreak of World War I in August 1914 interfered. Gance wrote the letter in purple ink and signed in a bold hand, "Abel Gance," followed by his address. Condition: Overall good condition, tape at margin fold of center margin on both… Read More

Description:
To Armand Salacrou (1889-1989), the French playwright whose Night of Fury appeared on Broadway during the 50's. "The words 'thank you' are so tired, used in such a hypocritical way that they lost all flavor. I would like to find other words that would not have to go through the mouth, where everything gets twisted, but directly to the heart. For you, Armand Salacrou who are always at the crossroads, indicating the way to salvation to octogenarians whose shoulders are beginning to bend. My wishes, my thanks to all in this illustrious Society, a member of which I am proud to be." Signed large and angled, "Abel Gance." Autograph

Description:
HARDIE GRAMATKY Drew and Signed a sketch of Little Toot, the New York Harbor tugboat, with a little boy's mischievous personality. His charming cartoon is probably the best known work of artist Hardie Gramatky. He worked at Disney Studios as an animator, was a highly respected water colorist, wrote and illustrated many books for children in addition to his most famous tugboat. On a 3 x 5 inch undated card, the artist sketched his playful tugboat broadly smiling, eyes purposefully fixed straight ahead as he moves on the water. Accomplished in blue ink, Gramatky dedicated the drawing and signed, "To...with best wishes 'Little Toot" and Hardie Gramatky." "Little Toot" was first published in 1939 by G. P. Putnam's Sons, and in honor of Gramatky's 100th birthday, Penguin Putnam reissued the tugboat story in a version closer to the original brightly colored publication. It also became an animated segment in Disney's 1948 film "Melody Time." Autograph

Description:
Our SIGNED letter is a poetic tribute to friendship and thoughts onhis own novels. "To Alan... I have never had a friend... I have always been a little afraid of you... because I liked you and was afraid you would soon see through me, and regarding me as an opaque, substanceless [sic] shadow, pass me by... I never thought of being different from my real self... I said, ‘If he is ever to like me at all, it must be with bad and all!'" Grey notes that he never cared what anyone thought of him, but that he "did care what you thought." He refers to his wife, Dolly (Lina Roth): "She is a woman and thinks me a hero, and you are a man and know that I am not." He further elaborates on his meeting Alan and becoming his friend in a very romanticized manner: "Such glimpses as I have had myself in some gray sleepless morning hour... twilight lonesome... have bewildered and terrified me. I have seen a calm, deep, star-studded pool and I have seen a maelstrom. So here's to the day I blindly broke into your office,… Read More

Description:
George Grosz Autograph Letter Signed with original art. The artist turns a friendly letter into a colorful sketch of a watercolor pencil crossed with a paintbrush. Mixing German and English and red, blue, green, and purple, he tells his friend, "you are one of the few people who do not bore me. Everybody just talks stupidly 'intellectual' picked up from their TV commentations...you in any case old boy (hands on the trouser seam) [standing at attention] you old boy, THANKS, also in Eva's name for the lovely (sadly ever scarcer) evening. War OKAY...Not too long. Time is running out...." He signs, "George." Eva refers to Grosz's wife. Below his signature, Grosz draws the brush with purple bristles crossing the watercolor pencil facing the opposite direction. The crossed brush and pencil may be a reference to crossed swords suggesting that the pen and brush are also deadly weapons. Near his signature, Grosz added a small collage element, initialed in purple with an arrow following "G.G." The initialed… Read More
